Maribel Character Analysis

Introduction I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with Maribel, who is a first grade student at Lou Henry Elementary School in Waterloo, Iowa. Our sessions were once a week, for six weeks, on Tuesdays that lasted for thirty minutes. Together we worked on developing Maribel’s reading and writing skills and to evaluate her growth. Throughout this experience, I learned that Maribel likes to read chapter books and likes funny books. When looking for a book, I tried incorporating one of those two characteristics. Our sessions included a read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, word work, and working on her writing. On the very first day, to get to know Maribel, I had an All About Me paper for her to fill out. It had questions on it that asked general questions, such as how old she is and when her birthday is but on the bottom of the page it had a section that she could fill out that talked about her favorite things. The purpose of the interest inventory I did with Maribel was to get to know her and assess her likes and dislikes. After she filled out the sheet, a few interests of hers I learned were that her birthday is October twelfth, her favorite color is blue, she loves reading chapter books and writing, and she likes to play soccer. A shared reading is an interactive reading that happens when the student joins in or shares part of the reading of a book with a teacher, and a guided reading is when the student reads with some guidance from the teacher, if needed. These three types of reading are so important to have in a literacy program and should be used at all ages. They allow children to be taught in a way that is focused more on their specific needs, helping them grow.
