During 1840s it was unclear on how the people of the United States felt about expanding their territory into other places. The country was divided on whether or not expanding their territory would spark political conflicts. This is one of the reasons why it took Texas years to be annexed by the United States. Manifest destiny was the idea that it was God’s given right for the United States to expand, and that it was inevitable. The public was divided by this idea and there were many people like John L. Sullivan that believed that this movement was going to happen regardless and that whites had to claim it. Polk was pro-annexation during his campaign and after his election into office, it was understood that the public agreed with manifest destiny. Eventually the US will get involved in a war against Mexico, where they will gain most of Mexico’s land in 1848. The United States goal to conquer and expand was not a new novelty in the 1890s because it was clear that the united states had clear intentions to become ‘big power’, similar to England and France. Territories were conquered and gained after Americans believed it was God’s given right for them to expand. Eventually with different immigrant groups, anglos began to believe that they were superior to any ethnic groups and that it was up to them to show them the right way of society. Rudyard Kipling expresses this ideal for American expansion and cultural shift in his poem named, “The White Man’s Burden”. The United States became to believe that there was only one way to live and that was the way anglos lived. They believed that imperialism was the only way to save others from their own selves.
