Management is black and white and leadership is the gray area. It takes thought and understanding of yourself before you can begin to understand another person or a group people and lead them in the right direction. We must be cognizant that although we may have a clear vision and plan to accomplish the mission it is not the only plan that may work. It is not necessarily the one that always has a different plan that is against you; it just may be that their personality type differs from yours which may seem to be in contradiction to yours. It’s through personality testing that we find out about our strengths and weaknesses and personalities of others that we may get along with better than others. Two things that Marines will never be accused of and that is having a lack of personality and a sense of structure. I find myself managing those personalities on a daily basis being the authoritarian at times and passive aggressive the other but still trying to please the majority. I have found weakness in my personality type. I often come off as too playful because I don’t believe that most work situations should be serious and as a result I may be perceived as not recognizing to some the severity of a problem. The needing to please or fix a problem now has led me to be overly involved and sometime to close to the situation to be able to give objective opinions. As a very senior enlisted Marine I must remain objective in order to render clear guidance to those I serve and serve with. I have often had to remind myself not to take over when I sense that the group is not working in the direction I originally intended for them to go. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven: Matthew 5:16 (NIV). My light shines when the group is successful and all the goals set forth are accomplished. Step 2 I took the this personality test 5 years ago and I received that same results back then which pleases me because I do appreciate the consistency but I failed to understand what the two main letter in my personality trait (SP) really meant as I interact with other personalities. As an SP I realize that I really don’t put much emphasis on organizational procedures in the same way a NF or SJ would (“Type Talk At Work” Kroegre, Thuesen, and Rutledge, pg. 84, 2002.) I believe that if I accomplished the mission, in the time prescribed and I did not violate any order or commit any gross negligence then the team and I are successful. What was learned I believe that in order to maximize the potential of employees it is imperative that they all take this personality test so that a manager can understand the personalities of his or her team.
