In the first chapters, the reader is able to recognize how much she loves her younger sister Primrose. The two are very close and Katniss prioritizes her sister’s welfare over her mother’s. Furthermore, in chapter 2, the reader gets an example of the impact Katniss’ identity has on her. When Primrose was initially chosen to participate in the Hunger Games , her sister said : “I volunteer!” .“I volunteer as tribute!”. Knowing how tough it would be for herself to lose her sister and how low her survival chances were coming out of a poor district such as her own District 12, she volunteered to participate. In other words, she went against the system to protect her loved one, in exchange she risked her’s. As the reader reads further in the book, he will realize how much Katniss will become more mature and will take more decision with her head. The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, was a book about trials. The main character, Katniss Everdeen, had to face many challenges and trials, both physical and psychological. In this essay I will be focusing on the three toughest trials Katniss had to face:The physical overcoming of her opponents, the psychological pain of leaving the ones she loves, and the change in herself she had to overcome. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen has been providing for her family since her father’s death in a mining accident. She has done this by illegally hunting beyond the boundaries of District 12 and using the game she kills for food or for barter. Through her skill with a bow and her ability to track and snare rabbits and squirrels, her family has been able to survive. They have also survived because Katniss signs up for the tessera, a ration of grain that is given in exchange for placing your name in the lottery for the reaping, the ceremony that determines who will be the district’s representative in the Games.
Katniss is the main character in the novel, The Hunger Games. The author of this book is Suzanna Collins. Katniss is a 16 year old who has been chosen with 23 other tributes. In my class we have studied themes and key ideas such as Power of the Capitol, Competition against other tributes and Sacrifice for what Katniss acts and does in the Hunger Games. There are many themes but I have chosen these 3 because they show the most emotions and power.
She often puts others happiness above that of her own, especially when it comes to those who are close to her. For instance, as her sister’s name is announced as tribute Katniss panics and gasps, “I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute!”(Collins, 2008) offering to take her sister’s place. Katniss would rather risk her own life in a situation where she is sure to fail, than have her sister Prim be endangered, displaying that she values her life more than her own. Later, as she visits with her family for the last time Prim suggests, “maybe you can win” but Katniss doubts herself, “I can’t win… The competition will be far beyond my abilities” (Collins, 2008). She truly believes that there is no chance of her surviving which shows how poorly she thinks of herself. Though she thinks little of herself, she thinks even less of her mentor Haymitch, even going as far as to call him “disgusting”. After having to endure him and his drunken antics on the train ride to the Capital, Katniss declares to herself, “I realize I detest Haymitch” (Collins, 2008). Katniss does many things others will not do in her situation. Whether it is helping her family or helping others. Katniss’ father died in a mining accident when she was eleven (5). Katniss’s mother did not handle it well. She stopped caring for her family. She became a zombie. Katniss had to start caring for her family (26, 27). One day Katniss figured it all out. Katniss thought, “The first dandelion of the year. A bell went off in my head. I thought of the hours spent in the woods with my father and I knew how we were going to survive” (32). This is when Katniss realizes her family would no longer starve. Katniss knew hunting in district 12 is illegal and the penalty could be death (5). Katniss risks her life. Katniss’s only concern is her family, no matter the danger.
Access to food draws a thin line between the privileged and the poor. In Suzanne Collins’ novel The Hunger Games, food has a massive impact on the different characters from the different locations. Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist, lives in the poorest district in Panem – District 12. Each different district has a specialty that they use to provide for the Capitol; District 12’s specialty is coal mining. Author Despail explains the districts in a way that makes it easier to understand by stating that “[e]ach outlying district in Panem forms an identity around not only the products the district is known for but also the ways in which its citizens cope with their lack of food” (70). She demonstrates courage during a time of fear, both in District 12 and during the Game. Her exceptional survival skills and intelligence is exemplified, as she provides for her family and endures the Hunger Games. She does not rely on anyone, as she is in fact, the provider, and nurturer for her family. Many of the Districts are in a severe economic crisis and struggle to survive; meanwhile, the Capitol and wealthier districts use this weakness to their advantage to exploit and torment the working class. Paralleling the gradual increase in popularity of female protagonists in media and literature, Katniss Everdeen represents a modern-day dystopian heroine who manages to break down the commonly used damsel-in-distress stereotype through her intelligence and natural physical skills to survive life and the Games.
Since she is the female victor from district 12, she is in the 74th Hunger Games. She sees how painful and scary it is and so she tries to stop the capital which is who is controlling everything. She doesn’t want that to happen to anyone else. She rebels against President Snow in plan of eventually killing him to take over the capital and change the world. Teens can relate to this because a lot of the time we feel controlled. It might be by a parent, teacher, grandparent or someone else but all of us are controlled by someone. A lot of teenagers end up rebelling because they feel as if they have no choices. They go against the rules of who they are rebelling against. That persons rules and values are not necessarily right. Who decides what is right? It seems as if we have entered into a state time where there is no right and wrong. Katniss breaks free of that control and does her own thing.
