In the novel The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins a new country is created. Panem is born in place of North America, were the Hunger Games began. In the Hunger Games, there are 24 tributes. Tributes are people who live in the districts. The tributes in the Hunger Games are all the same. They kill one another and become the Capitols puppets. The tributes become violent, emotionless puppets. Then there is Katniss. Katniss is an excellent hunter and becomes lethal during the games. However, she has not lost her compassion. Katniss does not think of herself as a good person. When in reality she is a good person with a large heart, who puts others before herself. Katniss does many things others will not do in her situation. Whether it is helping her family or helping others. Katniss’ father died in a mining accident when she was eleven (5). Katniss’s mother did not handle it well. She stopped caring for her family. She became a zombie. Katniss had to start caring for her family (26, 27). One day Katniss figured it all out. Katniss thought, “The first dandelion of the year. A bell went off in my head. I thought of the hours spent in the woods with my father and I knew how we were going to survive” (32). This is when Katniss realizes her family would no longer starve. Katniss knew hunting in district 12 is illegal and the penalty could be death (5). Katniss risks her life. Katniss’s only concern is her family, no matter the danger. The reaping is when a male and female tribute is chosen from each district. When the day of the reaping arrives, a surprise tribute is chosen. Which is Prim Katniss little sister (20). Prim’s name has only been entered once (21). Katniss cannot comprehend what has happened. Katniss may have hunter’s instinct; kill anything or anyone who tries to harm the people she cares about. Katniss would risk her life for them. Even in the games, Katniss would not kill the one person who stood in her way of winning. Katniss shows what matters compassion and her humanity. Katniss shows she is more than apiece in their games (232). Katniss remembers what Peeta said on the Roof. Peeta said,” I don’t want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I’m not” (141). Katniss does not want to lose herself, which she never does. Katniss shows she is a good person by forming alliances and taking care of other tributes. Katniss does not think she is good but she really is even if she cannot see it. Works Cited Collins, S. Katniss then goes through an interview with the host Caesar Flickerman. Where with help from her stylist and escort, appears gorgeous and stunning. However, Katniss owes the success to a plan organised by her mentor and Peeta, Katniss’ ordinary person type companion. Peeta admits to Caesar that he loves Katniss, who is unaware the plot and stands surprised, to make the two seem more desirable. The movie The Hunger Games, originally based on a book by Suzanne Collins, is about a place called Panem, which is ruled by the Capitol and has 12 districts within it. These 12 districts are separated founded on their economic statuses, meaning the higher the district, the more impoverished the residents are. There are 2 tributes that are chosen to participate, forcibly, in The Hunger Games each year. Each competitor is instructed to eliminate one another in order to survive and come out on top. There is only one tribute allowed to come out of the arena alive. Katniss lives in District 12, which is the most impoverished district of them all, and she volunteers as tribute in “the Reaping” when her sister is chosen to participate. She and the other tribute from her district, Peeta, make it into the arena with the hopes that one of them comes out the winner and above all else, alive (Ross, 2012). Katniss is the main character in the novel, The Hunger Games. The author of this book is Suzanna Collins. Katniss is a 16 year old who has been chosen with 23 other tributes. In my class we have studied themes and key ideas such as Power of the Capitol, Competition against other tributes and Sacrifice for what Katniss acts and does in the Hunger Games. There are many themes but I have chosen these 3 because they show the most emotions and power.
She often puts others happiness above that of her own, especially when it comes to those who are close to her. For instance, as her sister’s name is announced as tribute Katniss panics and gasps, “I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute!”(Collins, 2008) offering to take her sister’s place. Katniss would rather risk her own life in a situation where she is sure to fail, than have her sister Prim be endangered, displaying that she values her life more than her own. Later, as she visits with her family for the last time Prim suggests, “maybe you can win” but Katniss doubts herself, “I can’t win… The competition will be far beyond my abilities” (Collins, 2008). She truly believes that there is no chance of her surviving which shows how poorly she thinks of herself. Though she thinks little of herself, she thinks even less of her mentor Haymitch, even going as far as to call him “disgusting”. As she stands alongside the other dredging victims awaiting to hear what name will be called, she thinks of Gale. Her hunting partner from the district. She thinks of his forty-two names in the drawing, but then suddenly she hears the name called of the first tribute! Katniss screams to herself, “There must have been some mistake. This can’t be happening. Prim was one slip of paper in thousands! Her chances of being chosen so remote that I’d not even bothered to worry about her. Hadn’t I done everything? One slip. One Slip in thousands. The odds had been in her favor. But it hadn’t mattered” (Collins, 21). In other words, Katniss’ shocked by hearing Prim’s names called for tribute leads her to the impulsive act of volunteering as tribute. Katniss seems to change a lot in all three books, there are many sides to Katniss some being agitated, angry, and gentle. Katniss has dark brown hair and Brown eyes. Throughout the book Katniss is almost always on a script when speaking aloud, she is creating videos or “propos” to bring down the capitol. She is mainly trying to get all the districts on her side when they battle the capitol. She uses President Snow’s words to bring him down, like when she tells all of the districts and possibly the capitol that President Snow told her that the capitol is very fragile (meaning that the districts provide the capitol with food, water, building materials, and Peacekeepers) without the districts the Capitol will either learn to farm and mine or they will die off completely. Katniss interacts with many of the characters as well as the third party (Random people throughout book that are given no descriptions and show up only once or twice). When she takes her trip to district 8 to meet all of the wounded from the bombing, she was told to literally see everybody in the hospital and “chat” with them.
In various flashbacks of hers, she is able to rediscover and revisit past events, enabling herself to advance and succeed through the hunger games. She keeps arguing with Peeta whether or not she is going to go or not. Katniss wants to go and Peeta is saying she is going to stay behind. Peeta says “No, you’re not risking your life for me.”(274). Then Katniss lies and says she’s not going but really she just gives him spoonfuls of a syrup which actually makes him sleep so Katniss can sneak out and grab the medicine. Once she grabs the medicine Clove is saying that Cato, is out there hunting for Peeta. Clove said “I don't think you'll have much use for your lips anymore, want to blow Lover Boy one last kiss?”(286). When she gets back to Peeta she gives him the medicine and when they wake up it is much better than what it was before. “Much better, whatever you shot into my arm did the trick.”(291). Said Peeta. Katniss showed great bravery and courage when she ran out into the middle trying to grab that pack filled with supplies including the medicine.
Katniss ideals and integrity stay true and strong that is what make her different from everyone else. She values everyone's life and she does not believe that innocent people have to die to make a point of a situation. For example, The Hunger Games she completely disagree about being socially acceptable to kill children and being broadcast as entertainment for people to have a tea party while children die. Which her actions leads to do things out of the ordinary, like try to die with Peeta instead betraying him to go back and win the games. Peeta tells her that it should be you to go home I have no one. She says, “No I need you”. Katniss tells Peeta hit her because she does not believe in killing when it is unfair and person is unarmed. One trait of Katniss's that helps project the story's theme of survival is her resourcefulness. Chapter eleven, page one hundred and fifty-five states that Katniss is resourceful with this quote, "Before settling down, I take my wire and set two twitch-up snares in the brush." This quote expresses Katniss's resourcefulness and helps reinforce the theme because resourcefulness is an attribute that is needed in order to survive.
