The article “Malala the Powerful” is describing how Malala Yousafzai stood up for her gender when the Talibans took over Pakistan and Afghanistan. Malala was alive when the Taliban, a very deadly terrorist group, took control of Swat in 2007. Malala was 15 when this started. The Taliban made many rules enforcing the way women and girls lived. Malala lived through many challenges, but showed incredible courage towed the Taliban by speaking out about what she believes is right.

In the text it states, “‘Who is Malala?’ one of the men demanded. A feeling of terror filled the bus. And then the unthinkable happened: The gunman opened fired. One bullet pierced Malala’s head near her left eye… Most Taliban people see Malala as a threat to their way of life.” (6) This is a challenge because Malala can't go anywhere without safety. She also has no idea when or where she will be hit or maybe even killed. Another challenge for Malala is, “For women and girls, life is practically brutal: They are not allowed to go to school, have careers, or wear makeup or bright clothing. They are not allowed to go anywhere without a male relative.”(6) This is another challenge because the woman their have no freedom and they can't have any personality whatsoever. Another challenge is, “In January 2009, the Taliban ordered all girl’s schools to close. That included Malala’s school, which her father had owned for over a decade. It was devastating news. School was one of the most important parts of Malala’s life…”(7). This is a challenge because one of the things she love had been ripped from her life. For example, one act of courage was when her father did the complete opposite of what the Taliban ordered which was that all girls or women's schools are to be closed. In the text it says, “Despite the Taliban’s order, Malala’s father decided to keep his school open. This was incredibly dangerous, especially because the Taliban were gaining popularity.” (7) This is courageous because her father is going against what the Taliban are ordering. Another act of courage Malala did was when she spoke out about what she chose is right, it says in the text, “Malala possessed a weapon of her own: her voice. And she would risk everything to use it.” (7) This is an act of courage because she faced fears to do what she believes is right. One other act of courage Malala showed was during when she was a crusader (Malala is still a crusader to this day) in the text it states, “Malala’s crusade empowered her and other girls. Her courage gave hope to thousands.” (8) This is another act of courage because by her facing a lot of challenges it ended up being worth it. Malala was extremely courageous for all that she has
