Makeup Testers Analysis

The topic that I chose for my documentary is regarding the use of the makeup testers that are provided at Sephora locations. The reason that I decided to choose this topic is because there is always an internal battle for makeup consumers about whether they should use the testers or not. Most consumers are aware that there is a health risk associated with using them, however, often times it is not enough to deter them away from using the testers. This means that consumers are taking this implied risk without being aware of the consequences and without understanding the severity of the risk. Another reason that I chose this topic is because it personally affects me. When I go to Sephora I usually want to try my foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, lipstick, blush and other makeup products before I purchase them. It is important for me to know if the colour matches my skin and whether the colours complement my tone. Whenever I want to use a makeup tester, I always ask an employee to clean the product that I want to test with alcohol. I was always made to believe that by using alcohol, it would eliminate all the bacteria on the product. Even after I would ask the employees, they would affirm that the alcohol will kill all the bacteria. However, through the …show more content…

From personal experience, I know that Sephora, MAC Cosmetics, Shoppers Drug Mart, The Body Shop, and drugstores like Wal-Mart, all provide testers to their consumers. This means that companies that provide these testers must be able to develop a protocol that will help control the spread of bacteria. This is important for companies, specifically Sephora, to understand because it can otherwise cause lawsuits from consumers. In addition, since Sephora is the leader in the cosmetics industry, they must ensure that they steer away from lawsuits because it could ruin the company and brand
