Macbeth Appearance Vs Reality Analysis

Ever wonder why you shouldn’t trust someone by their outer appearances? In other words, much of what goes on around in the world, is due to what others think rather than what actually is. One’s eye can be easily manipulated by the actions shown and words spoken. This causes many conflicts to arise and have people lose faith in themselves and from others. The famous play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, best gives examples of appearance versus reality by the use of characters. Therefore, Macbeth illustrates that appearance versus reality leads one to deceive others and themselves.

First off, she does her best to make belief of everyone that she is as innocent as her husband. She convinces him to “Your hand, your tongue: look like the innocent flower, / But be the serpent under it…” (1.5, 73-74). This statement is important to the theme appearance versus reality because when Macbeth was nervously rambling as to why he killed the guards, she pretends to faint in order to draw attention away. This makes her seem like a weak and vulnerable woman, but in truth is ruthless and deceiving. Although Lady Macbeth has vicious thoughts, in reality she is scared and afraid. While she speaks to herself she states, “That which hath made them drunk hath made me bold;” (2.2, 1-2). This quote proves that Lady Macbeth had to drink in order to complete the task her husband left unfinished. Though in reality she had to drink because she couldn’t complete the job without not being in her senses. Lastly, when Macbeth starts to panic upon seeing Banquo’s ghost at the dinner, Lady Macbeth lies to all the noble guests. She explains to them, “Sit, worthy friends: my lord is often thus, / and hath been from his youth:’ pray you, keep seat;” (3.4, 66-67).
