As a small child in elementary school uniquely I can still remember the anticipation of lunchtime recess, are you able to recall that period in your life? Ordinarily, the lunchtime bell would ring, the teacher would line everyone up to eat lunch, that’s when the excitement began to build. The chatter of voices commerce to pervade the atmosphere as students consider what they prefer to conquer first. Mary-go-rounds, slides, swings, monkey bars, balls, jump ropes, a moment when imaginations explode and run rapidly. The instant lunchtime is over, the teachers open a portal to a wondrous world of whimsical delight: the playground. Freedom: no cares, no worries, a time to run wild, jump, and holler, time to enjoy being a kid, a time to appreciate being with your friends. Time with limited restrictions: unstructured recess. At the time, we did not perceive interactions, and experiences like this helped us dev build social, mental, and physical skills. Oddly enough, free play, recess, unstructured outside time, something we loved, and enjoyed doing, consisted of much more than we conceived, it was actually beneficial to us. Ultimately times change, this experience no longer exists for school-age children. For example, walk into any school during lunchtime you will not hear the chatter of children, you will not see the exercise of socialization. In many instances, the magical playground no longer exists. Conversely, students are hastily rushed through lunchtime, sanctioned in alphabetical sequence, not permitted the luxury of communicating with or interacting with friends.
