Identity The identity of people can be influenced by appearance, faith, and race. Who a person is can change due to numerous factors in his or her life. People often play an important role in influencing the identity of a person. Although one can not change the color of their skin or who they were born to, one does not have to let that define oneself or identify who one is. Often times our circumstances, surroundings, friends and family can contribute to our identities as well. Our identities can change as we grow older and our thoughts change. In Lucy Grealy’s “Mirroring” the narrator allows her appearance to dictate her life. She avoided mirrors because she did not feel attractive on the outside due to an extensive surgery that removed her lower jaw. She went through life isolating herself from others. The narrator because of her appearance allowed sex to become her salvation. She felt if she could get men to have sex with her that she was loveable and not ugly (Grealy 28). It is unfortunate that one would allow people to use or take advantage of him or her to feel better about oneself. Appearance is a strong aspect in modern society. Christians often are known for their faith. Their life completely revolves around their beliefs. Although some believers of faith do not let that define who they are. They allow people to influence them and put on a persona. On the other hand, people who reject faith explore the ability to let that identify and be a part of who they are. In Louise Antony’s “The Faith of an Atheist”, demonstrates how people can possess some of the same traits without having the same faith. It shows how people can have a moral compass, find meaning in one’s life, and love others regardless of whether or not they believe in God (7).
