How many times have you walked through the local mall and seen the present day version of beauty in a woman? Did she wear makeup? Was she thin enough to see through her skin? Or was she a more voluptuous body type? More than likely she was a thin woman who had makeup on and dyed or highlighted hair. She holds a job and is equal in legal status to a man. In most countries today, women are viewed as equal to a man both as a provider and as a citizen of the country in which they reside. Unfortunately, that has not always been the case. Women in early recorded history were viewed as nurturers/caregivers and entertainers, while being considered inferior in status to a man.
In Paleolithic times the earth became known as Mother Earth because it provided for its inhabitants in much the same ways as the women of that era provided for their families. Women were the gatherers, healers, and nurturers of their villages. They were prided for having a large, round body (which was considered healthy and conducive to child-bearing i.e. fertility). The Venus of Willendorf, a stone mother earth idol, demonstrates this effectively with its swollen fertile body. This is vastly different from how health and beauty are perceived today, with a thinner, firmer body being identified with health and well-being.
Later in Babylon circa 1800-1750 BCE Ishtar the “Queen of Heaven” was worshipped as a fertility goddess. In the plaque shown on page 20 she is shown with a round, full face, large breasts, and round hips to prove her fertility. Here the fertility icon of the time is not shown with as bulbous of a body, but is still shown with overtly feminine endowments. When Ishtar is adopted by the Egyptians, and is renamed as Isis, she soon becomes overshadowed ...

...ble to overcome the implied societal role of being fertile child-bearers? While there is nothing wrong with women being entertainers it is past time that women have been allowed a pivotal role in society beyond whether or not they bore the future ruler or dictator of the world. Today women are still unsure of where they fit in society even though they no longer are solely relegated to a role as a housewife. Approximately, 100 years after women have gained the right to vote as equal citizens within the United States and still women cannot manage to arrange for a female to sit in the highest seat of power in the country, the White House as President. It will take centuries of healing and cooperativeness between the sexes for the damage of millennia to be undone. Will this damage to women’s psyche ever be completely undone? That is for future generations to find out.
Some men believe women are inferior to the male species; however, that is not the case. Both men and women are both capable of achieving greatness if given half the chance to do so, unfortunately, this means equality. In “From A Vindication of the Rights of Women”, Mary Wollstonecraft dispenses her thoughts on how unfairly women are treated in the 1700s, in addition to expressing her opinion on the issue in her essay. Wollstonecraft stated that “Men and women must be educated, in a great degree, by the opinions and manners of the society they live in.”, this statement is very true, no matter what times you are living in. Women are unique and equal creatures that can offer many things to society if given the same proper education and training
Many ancient laws and beliefs show that women from all around the world have always been considered inferior to men. However, as time went on, ideas of equality circulated around and women started to demand equality. Many women fought for equality and succeeded in bringing some rights. However, full equality for women has yet to be fulfilled. This issue is important because many women believe that the rights of a person should not be infringed no matter what their gender is, and by not giving them equality, their rights are being limited. During the periods 1840 to 1968, total equality for women did not become a reality due to inadequate political representation, economic discrepancy, and commercial objectification.
In modern day society, female gender roles are defined in several of forms; ranging from the stereotypical concept of women being the primary caretakers to women being the dominant sex. After analyzing two sources of past literature, two iconic women represent personas of both social standings. In the literary works “Genesis” of The Hebrew Bible; along with, “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes, impactful phenomena take place in the era of these women.
It is said that the Grecians were the first people responsible for giving life to god and goddesses that looked like actual human beings. They made beautiful men and women. They made people with humor and dignity, as well as animals, including monsters (Daly). All of their gods and goddesses had rare capabilities, but there was one who was very distinctive and was loved by many gods and mortals. We all know her as the goddess of love, beauty, femininity and sexuality. Her name, Aphrodite.
The idea of equality has been around since the Puritans first came over to the New World. However, their idea of equality was that man is equal to man, not man is equal to woman. Since the age of the Puritans, women’s rights have improved immensely. Through women’s rights movements, American literature and the push of feminism throughout the United States, women are much more equal to men than they were in the early years of American history.
Discrimination happens every day, whether inadvertently or not. This mindset has been practiced for thousands upon thousands of years. We live in a society that is quick to judge other individuals based on their cultural background, race, age, even their financial status. Discrimination has been an ongoing issue throughout the world since the beginning of time. Women, throughout history, have experienced discrimination first hand for a long time. The women’s cultural background, race, financial status mattered, but not as much as the fact that she was a woman first. For example, women were thought of as fragile individuals with bodies that were not built to a man’s standard. For thousands
Women of these times were obviously not equal to their male counterparts. In modern days however, women are thought of as equals in society. The problem is that they are still not being treated as equals in a religious aspect as well as many other aspects. Elizabeth A. Johnson draws attention to how, despite being considered equal in Genesis, women had their worth ignored “Consistently subordinated and demeaned in the theories, symbols, rituals, A large wave of pro women thinking has arisen in the form of feminist theology. This line of thought draws from Genesis and the idea that men and women were created equally.
Nowadays, the students in Hong Kong facing lots of pressure due to academic result, family expectation, low self-confident and so on. Therefore, I would like to analyze the case study 1 to identify the possible problems of main character, Ken who often feels stressed and alone due to different reasons.
to the conclusion at one point that the whole thing was hopeless because it is a biological fact women have babies and that is always a career breaker. I end this paper rather disappointed that now, as it was centuries ago,are allowing their lives to be run by male views and stereotypes. The world is moving forward but unless women stop allowing
When women are often perceived they are thought of as a complicated, uneducated, person who should only stay inside the home to prepare dinner and take care of the children, at least in the 17th century. Now women are fighting for equal rights just as their counterparts and while they are still complicated and well-educated people it was not always this way women have been fighting this same fight for countless centuries before this time trying to be known as being just as important as their male acquaintances. The first time equality between men and women was thought of was in the 18th century during the enlightenment period.

The struggle for women to play an important role in history can be traced from the ancient Mesopotamians to the 1900’s. There has been a continuous battle for women to gain equal rights and to be treated equally in all aspects of life. The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest recorded account of the roles of women and their importance in a functional society. Women have been viewed as anything from goddesses to unwanted servants throughout history, regardless of a variety of changes in rulers, religions, and simply time periods. The Epic of Gilgamesh might lead one to consider the roles of women a small and insignificant part compared to the man 's role. In fact, three women; Shamhat, Ishtar, and Siduri, were able to create and maintain a civilized Mesopotamian society with using their uniqueness of their body, mind, and spirit.
Every culture has some form of higher being, to be a model for their behaviour, as well as to look up to. In Greek times, these were the gods and goddesses who made their home on Mount Olympus. Women identified with the goddesses because they shared some feminine attributes. Goddesses were a “symbol of motherhood and fertility, but also of strength, wisdom, caring, nuturing, temperance, chastity, cunning, trickery, jealousy, and lasciviousness” (Clarke, 1999). However, not all of the goddesses possessed all of these attributes. The goddess Aphrodite, for instance, was not nurturing, nor was she very caring.
Gender inequality can be quite different when considering the varying perspectives of all different kinds of women throughout history. For a middle class white woman of the 19th century, gender inequality can be as simple as “men are superior to women” and because of that they have rights and privileges women don’t, but for a black woman of the 20th century, gender inequality isn’t just defined by men being superior to women because the sexism black women face is affected by racism.
Psychologists and self help practitioners both agree that self-esteem is a relevant component in a persons behaviour and should be taken into account when assessing their well being. Within Psychology its precise relation to the well being of an individual has shifted along with trends within psychology itself regarding the subject. Social cognition is an example of a psychological theory that incorporates self esteem within its definition. It involves the persons interpretation of themselves as individuals and in their interactions with others along with there social environment. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) is a self-report scale developed by Rosenberg a psychologist who supported the social cognition theory. This self-report is a reflective test to assess a persons level of self-esteem (graded high or low) and is still applied in some cases when assessing a persons well being.
