In the House of the Spirits the characters portray a distinct type of love, where love is taboo. Allende manifests this because she wants her characters to preserve their love, and she wants to keep their relationships censored to prevent any consequences. In the case of Clara and Esteban, their love is taboo because their love is forbidden to speak about since they are separated. Their love reaches a pinnacle point, and it has nowhere else to rise. Their love remains for bidden because it is full of arguments and abuse, in which both Clara and Esteban do not want the public to find out about.
