As pointed out by Professor Stephen Lucas “The most important cause of poor listening is giving into distractions and letting our thoughts wander” (Lucas 60.) There are a few tips that can help any student, businessperson or friend listen more attentively. The first step to gaining full focus in class is by getting rid of distractions. These days one of the most prominent distractions is that little device that is no further than 3 feet away from you at this and every moment. The cell phone. If you think you can listen to a lecture, text your friend, take notes and play Clash of Clans on your phone at the same time you are horribly mistaken. In the book Brain Rules by John Medina, the author (a noted developmental molecular biologist) points out the fact that it is impossible for our minds to multitask, not difficult, impossible! So at least get rid of the phone when you are trying to actively listen. Another basic yet affective way to assist in actively listening is simply taking notes. By taking notes you’re not only creating a record of the information expressed but you’re are also more likely to absorb the material. With that said, don’t be the student that included every “the” the professor said during his lecture in his notes. Though from one extreme to the next, you also want to refrain from being the student that ends up with only a few irrelevant facts on his notebook paper at the conclusion of the lecture. What decision in life can we make on our that, wont affect the life of others, or harm them. How come when we try to protect our most loved ones, there the ones getting hurt the most for our actions that we tend no to acknowledge. Well back before Christ was born there lived a group of people called the Anglo Saxons who where mighty warriors that always set out to sea on voyages or adventures. Many of them died or got lost at sea, never being able to return to their homes to see their loved ones. In this essay we will discuss three messages from three different texts, the “Wanderer” translated by Burton Raffel, “Wanderer” Translated by Charles W. Kennedy, and “Wife’s Lament” Translated by Ann Stanford, each poem tells a different message form different situation and points of views.
This one being your first year in college, you may have trouble concentrating while you study. Some techniques that can help your concentration are being selective, relaxing, and over learning. Being selective means to make choices about what is most important to learn. When you are studying, you should be able to know what may or may not be on the test, your notes for the week can be helpful. In addition, pay attention to charts, tables, and illustrations that you think may appear on the test. Relaxing is a good technique to use because when you are relaxed you are able to absorb more information. One way to relax is to use a breathing technique (inhale, count from one to ten, and exhale, and count from one to ten, and so on). Over learning can help you fight mental vagueness. When you are struggling in a class, it is best for you to learn more than you need to know about the subject. You can use these techniques every time you are studying or when you cannot concentrate.
Listening is a vital and important part of communication. While speaking clearly and concisely is imperative, true listening is central to speaking with mindfulness and in the case of the counselor, this mindfulness has the possibility of leading clients to their own solutions to life’s tough circumstances. Communication within the workplace is often overlooked or not given as much importance as most people should allow, given the amount of time that is spent there. The Wanderer: A struggle with Faith In the Anglo-Saxon poem, The Wanderer, the narrator describes a man who is having a religious struggle between his old pagan traditions and the new Christian Philosophy. Anglo-Saxons believed in fate, fame, and treasure; and that one could not easily change his life. The Christian Religion believed of an afterlife in Heaven or Hell, and where one would go depended on their actions during their human life. Since Christians did believe in an afterlife, they did not believe in pagan philosophy; instead they believed God was in control of everything, and things in their life happened for a reason. Following this concept, defeat and misfortune were easier to accept, because if one suffered a horrible life on Earth, he would be rewarded for his misery in the afterlife.
