Life Lessons Learned

My life has offered many different experiences in which I have learned and used skills pertaining to leadership. These experiences have taught me many life lessons.
One of the more prominent experiences is the eighteen years I spent wrestling. Over these eighteen years I learned many things that would prepare me for the rest of my life. Being a team captain multiple times, holding a high school record for takedowns, and placing second at NAIA college nationals has helped me be successful in my life. I learned to attack situations head on and to not fear failure, just like in a match when you go to take down your opponent. Leaders should remain accountable for their mistakes but also be able to push through to the next challenge. Wrestling also taught me to be confident in my self to trust my decisions. When you are on the mat if you second guess yourself, it could cost you points or even the match. I learned that you need to remain confident in your abilities to win but also to remain humble. Leaders need to be confident, or at least appear to be confident. If the leader appears to be uncertain it can cause those following to also become doubtful in the leader’s abilities, which can be detrimental to the project at hand. I also learned to always give one-hundred percent on and off the mat. Johns was when I worked at the boys and girls club in my home town. At this job, I guided and informed kids in many different situations all while creating a safe and fun environment. One major skill I learned from this experience was to empower others. The mission statement of the club is, “To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.”. From this statement, it is visible that one of my major jobs was to help the kids succeed. Empowering the kids to be the best person they can be was a very important task we had. Leaders should do the same for those around them. Another skill I learned from working here was being generous. I shared my spare time (whatever I had left from wrestling and school) to help the club members to be better people and succeed in their lives. Leaders should always try to give everything they can to help others
