Lesson Plan: Keeping Our Teeth Healthy

Subject: Health and Literacy

Overview: Teacher will introduce this lesson to the class as a whole. All children will sit on the rug and the teacher will play the video “Sesame Street: Healthy Teeth, Healthy Me: Brushy Brush PSA.” Students will then explore how to keep our teeth healthy on their own. Teacher will then teach a small lesson on how to keep our teeth healthy through the video “Dentist Video (Sesame Street),” through the book Open Wide: Tooth School Inside by Laurie Keller, and through the use of a giant mouth model. She will then ask these students to practice proper brushing and flossing on these models. As an exit ticket, students will be given their own, brand new, toothbrushes with a little packet in which to teach parents and legal guardians the proper way to brush and floss their teeth. Parents are to sign a form acknowledging that they have received the packet, read it, and practiced dental hygiene with their children. As this will be a very simple and basic lesson, it should reach all students, at every level. There will be a new vocabulary to be learned, but it will be introduced slowly, thus giving time for all children to learn. As there are a couple of ELL students in the classroom (both speak Spanish), if possible, teacher will give instructions to these children, both in English and Spanish, as well as model what they will have to do. There is also a student with ADHD, who the teacher will sit next to her during lecture time and use him as a helper in order to keep him engaged in the lesson.
