Are leggings a problem in schools? No, not in the manner people see them as. The problem isn’t that leggings are too revealing and sexual, it’s the people who perceive them as such. If a boy was to go to school with leggings and shorts barely anyone would care. The problem isn’t that the leggings are the source of the boys’ distraction, it’s the boys’ adolescent minds getting stimulated by the thoughts of any growing boys. Do you expect a five-year old boy to be distracted by what a five-year old girl is wearing? Of course not. If you were to ask a child or teen what they thought about school, they would probably say that they dislike school for a multitude of reasons, two of them being: a misogynistic dress code and the stress of balancing schoolwork with the expectations of society. The American educational system is inadequate compared to countries like Finland in which the dress code is nonexistent and the curriculum is more flexible to human needs; it is imperative that we come together to assure Dr. Anna Hinton, director of innovation and improvement, that she can enhance the broken educational system.
Life is full of distractions and, for high school students, inappropriate clothing has the potential to grab much attention. However, does the matter of clothing warrant strict rules? I agree that, like alcohol, the students’ attire should have rules regarding whether or not the choices in clothing are suitable for a public school setting. I'm sure everyone has seen them. The pants so tight they appear to be painted on. But then they realize, they're not actually pants, merely relatively thick tights masquerading as pants. Suddenly they're thinking, surely these women forgot to put on the bottom half of their outfits. Notwithstanding, this abomination was completely intentional. Women are now wearing leggings in the stead of pants, which is one fashion trend that our community, and the world at large, could do without. Although undoubtedly comfortable, and completely acceptable when worn under dresses, skirts, long shirts, and shorts, leggings are not the most flattering article of clothing when worn in lieu of pants. When worn incorrectly, leggings draw attention to the negative aspects of the wearers body. People can see every jiggle of the thighs and butt, every dimple of cellulite, and every crevice of a person's anatomy. Generally speaking, most females would not want to promulgate these details of their bodies, but todays young women apparently thrive on displaying them for the world to see.
Varying Issues Corresponding to the School Dress Code Numerous cases have been presented and highlighted in the media based off of accounts from angered parents and students protesting the school dress code. Multiple reports are taken from females who experience the shorter end of the stick due to increased fashion interests and sexist mindsets of their school staff. Shame suits are humiliating outfits that those who break the rules must wear as a form of punishment, most of the time these consist of extremely unflattering clothes that have written phrases on them indicating that their appearance is due to their violation of the school rules. Punishments indicated a risk to the violators education caused by missed classes. Few in society do approve of the dress code as it controls female students’ modesty, banishes distraction, and preserves the professional atmosphere inside a school.

There are more dress code policies for the females compared to the males. For example, girls should not use backless shirts, no spaghetti tops, no crop-tops that exposes the stomach, no short shorts, no miniskirts, etc. Boys on the other hand have no specific dress code policies. Dress code, probably one of the most talked about topics by teenagers. Most teenagers believe that dress code is “witless” or “incompetent”. Why do we think this? Well, most adults believe that keeping a strict dress code keeps us educated because apparently our clothes are “distracting”. Now I can see how wearing booty shorts and a tank top would be distracting, but how is wearing sweatpants distracting? If anything wearing sweatpants keeps us comfortable, because I know that being uncomfortable is way more distracting than wearing sweatpants. When I wear sweatpants I can lay back and relax while the teacher talks, but if I am uncomfortable I am more likely to move around and fidget with my clothes rather than listen to the lesson.
Dress Codes are commonplace in today's society but in recent years, outrage at restrictive dress codes are increasing. A report by The Guardian illustrates an example of a restrictive dress code. Stephanie Hughes was called to the Principal’s office because the outfit she was wearing revealed her collar bones. Her outfit, comprising of a cardigan with a tank top underneath and jeans, was deemed as by her School Principal as inappropriate attire. The Principal explains that because her outfit revealed her collar bones, it would distract fellow male students and was hence not appropriate for school. In a lot of schools in the United States young girls were send home to change their clothes, because those clothes were seen as a distraction. Girls have been sent home for wearing a top, which was showing a bra strap, for wearing a v-neck, for wearing yoga pants, or for wearing make up. Meanwhile boys often wear their trousers revealing their boxer shorts. However, there is not one single record of a boy being send home to change because he was seen as a distraction. In addition in most cases the boys in the classroom were not even distracted by the appearance of their female classmate, but the in most cases also male teacher decided that the appearance was distracting. This is a perfect example of how girls are already sexualised at a young age by men, who are twice their age. One of the greatest controversies that is spreading throughout high schools in the United States is parents and their children against the enforcement of their school’s uniform policy. More schools have been adopting uniform policies within the past decade. Rules contained in the policy that are implemented range from wearing certain types of tops (shirts) in specified colors to students being required to tuck in their shirts. In the past, uniforms were exclusively for students who attended private schools because they were “well-off”, but now uniforms are being seen more frequently in public schools on students of all economic levels. Having gone through a school system that considered adopting a uniform policy, I would have to press against the issue of mandated uniforms, because it is simply un-American and unjust.
In society today, school-age children are under tremendous pressure to fit in with their peers and still perform well academically. I believe that school uniforms in pre-K through high school levels is an excellent way to help children succeed not only in school, but to prepare them for college and the “real world.” Three reasons why I believe school uniforms should be used in all schools is first, they are economic, next, they reduce distractions and finally, they help with social equality.

Many private schools and some public schools require students to wear a uniform but the majority of schools do not. The school boards need to understand all the bad things uniforms have to offer. School uniforms are useless because they do not help fix any major problems, are very expensive for the less fortunate families, and oppose the rights every Canadian is entitled to; therefore, must not be mandatory to wear in school.
School uniforms in public schools are becoming increasingly popular across the nation. The public school system would benefit greatly if this policy were to be adopted. Opposition is always a factor when trying to make changes. Taking all things into consideration, the positive effects would be far greater than the negative effects. School uniforms should be required in public schools because their use would lead to higher education, less violence, and lower cost to parents.
To place the blame on young women for how they are treated by men due to their dress is completely unfair. A girl could wear an oversized t-shirt and baggy sweatpants and a boy will still be curious about her. The same is true for girls. The idea that it is a girl’s fault if she is commented about or raped for how she is dressed is sickening and completely sexist.
