1. When I was younger, I learned piano as my first instrument because piano provides basic musical knowledge for other instruments that I may have wanted to learn in the future. Moreover, I really enjoyed the piano’s timbre and versatility as an instrument. I was very excited to pick up my first instrument. However, I soon came to realize that I had no knack for piano whatsoever. The songs that I learned as a child were classical songs; they were repetitive, predictable, and extremely boring for me to play. Piano became more of a drag and proved to be very challenging for me to learn. My teacher struggled to teach me because I was not retaining information well and because I simply did not enjoy piano anymore. Every year …show more content…

Nevertheless, my goal was to complete what I had started—I wanted to complete NYSSMA all the way up to its highest level, level six. During those last two years, I made sure to put in my best effort to learn piano. I made time—albeit not a lot of it—to practice my piano at least once per week. My improvements were slow and painful, but I was able to pass both levels five and six, accomplishing my goal of completing the task that I had started. Interestingly enough, two years later I sat back down at the piano and began to self-teach myself some songs that I enjoyed. I had come to realize that piano could be an instrument that I could enjoy playing, that I had made piano a drag for myself by playing abstract songs that I did not relate with. Now I practice piano for fun, not because I force myself to. This story provides insight into me because it shows that I am the type of person that will finish a project once I start one. I believe that it is not right for me to quit a project, especially a group project, once I have committed to it. This applies to science research because once I have spent the time to find a mentor at a university laboratory and really begin research with him or her, I cannot simply leave the …show more content…

Spending time during the summer to conduct extensive scientific research will help me to consolidate my future career choice. Moreover, I have learned the basics of science research from my prior studies and want to expand on my research knowledge and experiences. I spent much of last year learning about how to write a research paper, how to do statistical analysis using SPSS, and how to effectively present a research poster board and/or how to present from PowerPoint. I had my own in-house experiment last year where I learned how to take data and accept either my null or alternative hypothesis. My prior knowledge in research has sparked my passion to further my research career by having the opportunity to work at a lab at a university or another professional institution. Furthermore, I am also very interested in spending time over the summer conducting scientific research because it will allow for me to learn about specific subjects that I am very interested in. I will learn concepts that I will not normally learn in a classroom setting. Personally, I am interested in conducting research in either physics or biomedical engineering. For physics, I am most interested in astrophysics/cosmology as well as theoretical physics (String Theory). For biomedical engineering, I am interested in studying just about any human body system. I am interested in physics because I have spent the past year and one trimester learning about the subject, which has really heightened my
