In the movie I am Alive, a plane carrying 45 passengers goes down deep in the Andes mountains due to a fatal miscalculation by the pilot. 12 passengers died during the initial impact leaving 53 survivors bewildered and unsure of what to do. In the days following the crash, the harsh circumstances began to take their toll as the weak and injured began to drop. For over 70 days, 16 men denied death by using the flesh of the fallen passengers as nourishment. Through endurance, courage, and selflessness, the survivors worked for a miracle they knew would come.
The survivors showed endurance by having the physical and mental stamina to keep living one day at a time. For example, when Nando and Roberto were venturing out into the mountains to find help, it would have been incredibly easy to give up and go back down the mountain. Courage is the ability to overcome fear physically and morally. While stranded in the mountains, one of the biggest things the survivors felt was fear. When that plane crashed in the middle of the mountains, nobody knew where they were and what could happen. The biggest fear present was fear of the unknown. Instead of being pushed down by the fear, the survivors were courageous and overcame one obstacle at a time. They started with what they knew and built a system from there because they had the courage to make life possible. I’ve experienced fear many times in my life and every time, I am forced to dig deep to find the courage to overcome. Before my first mountain bike race I was filled with fear. It was on the hardest trail on the mountain and I was completely unfamiliar with the terrain. I was going up against riders who had six times as much experience as I did. I had to dig deep to find the courage to get on my bike and race instead of taking the easy way out and disqualifying
