D) Philosophy can be defined as a search for an ultimate Truth, one that is universal to all of humanity. It uses logic and reasoning to create arguments, and these arguments are then analyzed to prove whether or not they are tenable.
A) Philosophers study those things we cannot know about. This makes sense as Russell Lawrence in “The Value of Philosophy” notes that when a field becomes definite and provable, it becomes its own field, whereas those things that still remain in philosophical study are not known.

D) Metaphysics is best described as “the search for the basic structure of reality”. The word metaphysics comes from the Greek “ta meta ta phusika”, meaning “after physics”.
C) Epistemology is the study of knowledge. This branch of philosophy asks questions about how we know what we know; for example, a question that epistemology would ask is “how can we know that what our senses tell us is correct?”.
C) Ethics can be defined best as “how we should live our own lives and treat others”. Philosophers ask questions regarding ethics frequently; an example of a question on ethics would be “are our values relative, or are there absolute values for everyone to follow?”.
D) The best starting point for philosophic studies is a good question. This is due to the fact that a good question can generate arguments for and against it, which makes it worth studying. An example of a good philosophical question would be “is God
Philosophy questions many ideas or statements. For example, the Examined Life asks, does life have meaning? This idea was analyzed, experienced, questioned, discussed and concluded in many different ways. There was a common thread between the Philosophy film, the Apology, our class discussions and the video, Examined life. We often ask ourselves, are we obligated to other people?
Philosophy is defined by Webster as "Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline" or "Investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods." This essay is a general look at those who pursued that intellectual means, those who investigated, even those who reasoned Reason. Because volumes could be written and this is a rather quick, unworthy paper: apologizes.
1. Choose two of the philosophers we've read and compare them on one idea that is most important to you. a. Clearly explain the idea using references to the text. b. Show that each of these philosophers agrees on this particular idea ( e.g., each of these philosophers agrees that...use references from the text to show that this is so ). Do you agree with the view the philosophers put forward? Why, or why not?
In life, everyone is in some way a philosopher. Everyone has their own philosophy for life. People ask questions, find answers, come to conclusions, and argue their points. Some people are not aware that they have a way of looking at things, which is what philosophy is – a way of looking at things.

Philosophy is a study of beliefs and knowledge by a group or an individual; the study of philosophy according to Socrates was supposed to lead man with knowledge that equaled virtue that eventually led to happiness. Philosophy was a way of living back in Greek culture. There were philosophers like Socrates, Plato, Arcamedies, and Aristotle that were constantly question why things happened and went against what was Greek religion. These men taught the Greek people to study philosophy and knowledge so it would free their souls. Socrates felt that mans soul was rational factuality but the soul was filled with irrational choices. Man needed to focus on what they could do to become truly pure and rational that would led them to there rational soul.
Philosophy aims at explaining what why and how existence ‘is’. Philosophers attempt to analyze our reality, behavior, morality, and rules, all to understand and create a structure for our world. We use philosophy to understand our reality. Plato described philosophy as the science of the Idea. Aristotle defined it as the science of the universal essence of that which is real or actual. Philosophies purpose is, put simply, to explain this science and, in doing so, achieve power over our own li...
A traditional, and still common, view of the difference between philosophy and the 'special' sciences is based upon the dichotomies universal/particular or general/special. It is said that philosophy deals with the general issues concerning some subject matter while the special sciences take care of the more specific issues. Chemistry concerns itself with properties of various chemical compounds and physics with forces and the motion of bodies, while philosophy deals with the general nature of matter, general questions of causality, determinism, etc. Linguistics deals with special, empirical questions about the nature of language, while philosophy is supposed to discover the general principles that govern all language.
On the other hand philosophy helps us to better understand and access to knowledge. This type of study is known as epistemology. Epistemology creates a foundation of the basis of knowledge. One of the bases of knowledge is truth and fact. However this can be a very problematic area because if a statement is deemed to be true then it is automatically a factual statement. This causes problems because the words true and fact are interchangeable i.e. if a statement is a fact...
Philosophy may literally mean the ‘love of wisdom’ as it is deprived from two Greek words (Hales, 2012, p. vii), but as a whole is much more than the love of wisdom and critical reflection; it is more about “giving good reasons for one’s non-empirical beliefs…[and] to give arguments for believing claims about nature of the self, or the existence of God, or moral duty, or the value of knowledge” (Hales, 2012, p. vii). Therefore, I agree that philosophy also sheds light on many disciplines centrally explored. For the purpose of this essay I will discuss deontology, the philosophy of religion and touch bass on other disciplines slightly as a reference to how philosophy sheds light on many disciplines.
The term “philosophy” means the love of wisdom, and those that study philosophy attempt to gain knowledge through rationality and reason. 1 Socrates, the father of ancient philosophy, once stated “the unexamined life is not worth living”. This is the most important part of life and it is need to find purpose and value in life. If a person chooses to live their life without examination, their life would lack value and they would be unhappy. They would also be ignorant to the effects of their choices on themselves and the people around them.
Philosophy in a simple language means love for wisdom and I think everybody loves wisdom but not all people are aware about the importance of Philosophy and its role in shaping the better society. As most people I also was not aware about the importance and gravity of philosophy as well. In fact, I always thought philosophy was a pretty inconsequential and vague subject until I took the philosophy course this semester. My perceptions and thoughts about the subject has changed significantly afterwards. The course was completely different than my expectation and its changing ever since. I have learned many new things that certainly will be helpful for me throughout my life. I have always had a love for wisdom but I had never considered myself as philosopher. Nevertheless, I have been learning and understanding the importance of philosophy and I
Throughout this semester in philosophy I’ve come to realize one thing for sure, that one thing being that philosophy doesn’t not easily come defined. While reading all the works of Plato one comes to the realization that philosophy as an activity is like trying to see both sides of a door at the same time. There are many different types of doors and way to look at all of them. There are so many different types of ways to define philosophy.
The scientific view of matter has evolved over time. Science for many centuries has been accompanied by philosophical thought, throughout time the mixture of the two is very evident. The beginnings of western science, namely physics, coincide with that of the first period of Greek philosophers. Physics is in fact a term derived from the Greek word “physis” which means “the endeavor of seeing the essential nature of all things” (Capra, 1977, p. 9). The basic ideas evolved from the Greek philosophers, and philosophy remained a big part of science right up until the Newtonian view of the universe.
Philosophy has a strong influence on everyone’s day-to-day life. We all enrich our lives by thinking about things with a substantial value. We use philosophy as a sort of roadmap to direct us through our lives. We, of course, take other things into consideration while we are going through our day, but philosophy is one of the more ample ones.
