For many years sociologists have studied the behavior and patterns in which individuals live their lives. The LGBT people struggle with biased discrimination, abuse, hate-crime, and many other safety concerns daily. The social dysfunction of our society regarding the LGBT people has become less, however is still very much a current issue. Many of these issues have ever lasting effects on individuals and continue throughout their life in its entirety.

They are the subject of ‘jokes’ as well as sexual advances and unwanted stares from others. Safety precautions have been addressed in the sense of legislative changes and the recognition of ‘sexual orientation’. These initiatives focus on hate crimes of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. The violence and oppression does not simply come to a stop because of a legislative change. Attempts have been made by multi-agency partnerships and through community safety approaches (Browne, Bakshi, Lim 2011). One issue stemming from a lack of safety is exclusion of personal rights as a citizen. Taking an approach that addresses how social policy could work to transform the basis of status might shed light on the broader social context of marginalization of the LGBT people. This approach could potentially empower the LGBT people and encourage them. For an incident to be recognized as a ‘hate crime’, there has to be an identification of hate motivation and an identification between the victim and victimized group (Browne 2011). In England and Whales, criminal Justice Act that includes sexual orientation, places offenders at a longer sentence. Criminal justice and policing are the most common approach to experiences of abuse. The safety of the LGBT people is also dependent on the resources available to them as well as the opportunities presented to them to create such safe zones not liberated by heterosexual norms. Having diversity within the LGBT people, there are many separate groups to focus on specific issues. Many of these places have weekly meetings and break them down to youth, young adult and older adult options also referred to as peer groups. The LGBT support groups also participate in many awareness events such as Pride. Pride is a local event where all the subcategories of LGBT people come together along with heterosexual supporters to celebrate themselves. It is a way of saying they are proud of who they are and should be accepted for who they are.
Having participated in the event know as Pride, I felt a sense of love and acceptance that one does not typically feel in the public anymore. After attending one of the meetings for parents of LGBT people, it is my conclusion that the parents struggle with the and oppression as much as the LGBT person in many cases. Many parents are thankful to have such a group to connect with and receive advice from. Some parents say nothing and just take in all the information while others will discuss any topic you bring up for as much time as you have free.
