naya’s “Bless Me, Ultima” is a novel where the main character, Antonio, finds himself living in a world with Ultima, a curandera, through a religious perspective. They say ignorance is bliss, right? However, what happens when one begins to seek knowledge? When someone begins to gain more knowledge they start to question certain things. For example, a child would question the basics of space and come to realization to why no one lives there. However the child in “Bless Me, Ultima” by Anaya, Antonio, has a different idea of what he wants to learn. Instead like a normal child, who wants to learn why the sky is blue, Antonio’s decides that he wants to learn the meaning of life, the meaning of spirits, why everything happens and because of that Antonio finds himself questioning God himself. Because Antonio questions the unknown it leads to him having epiphanies
The coming of Lucas’, Antonio’s uncle, ill really caught the attention of young Antonio. It grasped his attention not in a way of sympathy for his uncle Lucas, but the fact that the priest only blessed the house and would go no further so therefore his question rose, “Why doesn’t the priest fight against the evil of the brujas. He has the power of God, the Virgen, and all the saints of the Holy Mother Church behind him.” Antonio was a child who always believed in God’s power being absolute, which is why he questioned the priest and his actions. When Ultima cured Lucas the event had stayed in Antonio’s mind for quite some time. “In my mind I could not understand how the power of God could fail. But it had” That one statement had great meaning, especially by the words “But it had.” This comes to show that Antonio now realized that Gods power was not absolute that there were things that the power of God cannot fix. This can be fortified by the fact that Antonio wonders whether the power in Ultima’s magic was greater then that of the priest back on page
