Have you ever wanted to become a billionaire without leaving the confinement of your home or even breaking a sweat? In the book Kingpin: How One Hacker Took Over The Billion-Dollar Cybercrime Underground, written by Kevin Poulsen, the story revolves around this scheme to get extremely rich without leaving your house. The main character, Max Butler, sat in his safe house hours upon hours and secretly stole important credentials from servers that he hacked into from his own personal computer. As Max Butler kept climbing his way to the top of the cybercrime world he could feel the heat from the Secret Service and FBI creeping up from behind. This story begins when Max Butler was a high school student in a small town called Meridian located in the heart of Idaho. He did not fit in with the cowboy culture of the town since he was such an expert with computers. He was the protector of his group of friends because he stood six feet five inches tall. Max had a habit of getting into trouble during his high school days in Boise so when his friends found a master key to the school, they decided not tell him because they feared what he might do with it. He had already had one run-in with the law for phone phreaking where he scanned for long distance codes. When he finally recognized the key to the school on one of his friend’s key chains, the two broke into the high school where they ransacked the inside. Max also found the storage closet for the chemistry chemicals and put them in his car where later that night he made a fire in one of his friend’s front yard. The next day, during police questioning, one of his friends spilled the beans on him and Max was convicted as a juvenile where he received psychiatric evaluation and probation.
