Path of Life that led to Oedipus’s Doom Everything in life is caused by actions made in the past. In the play “King Oedipus” by Sophocles, the main character Oedipus reveals challenges faced in his life due to his decisions. Oedipus being an arrogant character does not care for others because he finds himself to be superior. Oedipus blinded himself because he could not bear to see the shame that came upon him, caused by his aloofness. Although Oedipus had a guilty conscience he blamed others for the murder of King Lauis. Oedipus is not to be pitied as he chose the path of his life through the decisions he made and his character, reinforcing that individual choice have consequences. He believed that he should “have forbidden myself to see – having commanded” (1380). He “forbids” himself to see the shame and guilt he brought upon himself by punishing himself before anyone else can punish him. He does not allow himself to see as an act of superiority and a sacrifice. In order to be pitied by the people of Thebes, how often is a blind man punished. A man who cannot see his sin cannot sin. He then goes to say that hia “Unspeakable acts – I speak no more of them. / Hide me at once, for God’s love, hide me away. / Away! Kill me!” (1408-1410). Once again Oedipus wants to show that he is not capable of living this life and that it should be taken away from him instantly, so he does not have to see the shame. His death would be the simplest punishment because he will no longer have to live the life he is living. He additionally wants to be freed from the guilt he is feeling that he will never be able to forget in a lifetime. These are the decisions he made as a result of misfortune, which did not benefit him but made his life much harder than it was. He can no longer see his shame but neither can he see light and day.
