My interest in pursuing a Bachelor of Kinesiology degree is constructed by a variation of components in my life. Starting from a young age and being driven by selflessness, my motives have always been linked to helping others. In fact, my position at Mount Sinai of helping to recover the optimal physical functions of patients with disabling conditions made me realize what I wanted to devote my career to. This feeling of being able to bring a smile to someone’s face or positively affect the trajectory of their life by improving their well-being have motivated me to join the health care team. Exercise science possess many traits that attracted my attention whether it dealt with the different job opportunities or the ability to help an individual. There are two areas of exercise science that one can choose as a possible career path or as a major minoring in something else related to this type of work. One of the areas of study includes exercise physiology which can be defined by “the study of how the body’s structures and functions are changed as a result of acute and chronic bouts of exercise”. Not only does exercise physiology promote a healthy lifestyle, but it is closely connected to human performance, fitness, development/aging, and prevention/rehabilitation from disease or injury. Pursuing a degree in exercise physiology allows an individual in this profession to choose between several careers including physical education, exercise science and athletic training (Fisher, 2). In addition, becoming a chiropractor can be achieved through exercise science.
I have many goals as an Athletic Training Student, and continuing my education is the biggest goal in order to be successful in my career and future goals. Eventually, I will earn a doctorate and go on to work at a professional level with a major league soccer team. I also aim to increase the knowledge and awareness of mental health within the field of athletic training.
Physical therapy and kinesiology work in a close relationship to each other. Essentially one may think they are one in the same, however there are small differences between the two that provide different results when applied singularly. As a combined effort physical therapy and kinesiology work to heal the muscles and joints of the body, recreating movements perfectly as they were before injury or in some cases as closely as one can get to a perfect function. First one must understand where the lone is drawn between the two fields and how they balance each other to create desirable results in a patient.
Every part of our body is a science. I never imagined the hidden science in the movements of the body. The science of kinesiology is the science of body movements. I grew up watching my grandma and the changes in her body as both of us got older, I could walk and balance properly while she lost it. I always felt bad when she was not able to get up and walk properly and as caring grandson I always gave her my hand. It was a great feeling for me to take care of her in her last days. Her difficulty in moving always pointed me to do something for her and I landed doing kinesiology- the science of human movements. I completed my high school at Cathedral High School in West Texas. I was an active member of National Honor Society as well as Spanish Honor Society. I held the treasurer position for one year in the society, which I felt proud of. I was not excellent at my academics, was just an average student struggling with the subjects of chemistry and anatomy. I was offered a kinesiology class as an elective. Kinesiology being an integral part of physical therapy. I decided to take it because I was on the football team and I was required to keep myself in top physical shape. From what I understood about kinesiology, I thought it would be helpful to know the inner mechanics of working out and staying physically fit. During my time in that class I learned about the musculoskeletal system, nutrition, anatomy, and just about everything that has to do with kinesiology. At the time, I didn’t really consider a career in kinesiology, I had a stronger interest in science, but my interest in kinesiology was still prevalent. Had I followed this interest, my choice would have been way easier to make and I would already have a plan of what I want to do.
Many people are more active today than they were many years ago. Injury prevention and diagnosis plays a big role in today’s society. Preventing an injury is important for many athletes all over the world, and for people that are physically active. Preventing injuries can benefit an athlete in the long run. Athletic trainers help athletes and physically active people stay healthy for what they do on a daily basis.
Beginning at the age of six, I have played some type of sport year round. I was always a bigger kid growing up, weight wise and height wise and unfortunately, I inherited bad knees. Combine this with the perils if sports plus some bad luck, the saying “the bigger they are the harder they fall” was a reality for me. When I fell, I fell hard. It took a lot of pain for me to want to go to the doctor’s office. I have spent a lot of time there. I’ve had many physical therapy sessions as well. I’ve also had numerous conversations with active athletic trainers and people that were athletic trainers in the past. They all said the same thing, “I love my job.” In the 8th grade one particular therapist sparked my interest in becoming a physical therapist.
The career I have chose is Physical Therapy(PT). Physical Therapist do many different things, but their main function is to help impaired or physically disabled people enhance their movement and handle their pain. Physical Therapist are a main source in the rehabilitation, medical care and prevention of people with long lasting illnesses or damage. The reason I chose this career is because I love helping people and enjoy seeing people be motivated and succeed at their task. To help someone gain full strength in their limbs or maybe even learn how to walk again is my lifelong dream. Throughout my life, I have always loved physical fitness and athletics. Unfortunately, due to a horrible knee injury at the end of my senior year of high school’s basketball season, my athletic lifestyle came to a screeching halt. Ever since I have gone through physical therapy and gotten back on my feet, I have had the desire to pursue a career in the field of health and fitness and my goal is to become a personal fitness trainer so I may help others reach their fitness goals and teach ways to be active safely and help prevent major injuries. Exercise Science is a field of work that is valued by many. There are different paths for different kind of people whether they are interested in personal training, physical therapy, or even some kind of sports coach. The route I would like to take would be Exercise Science for Athletic Training. I want to be an Athletic Trainer because growing up, I loved playing and watching sports. I played baseball for about 2 years, ran track for 3, and played basketball my entire life. After my high school career, I knew that I could not stay involved in sports because all of the injuries I have experienced so I decided I wanted a job that is behind the scenes but still rooted in athletics.
When I am 30 I would like to become a physical therapist, which is a certified health care professional, which practices in the field of sports medicine. I chose this career because throughout high school it became a very appealing job that I would want to get into, and I had done a job shadow and had received treatment for injuries before from an athletic trainer. The salary cap low for the job is $35,000 to a high of $75,000 per year. Most athletic trainers have 4 years of college education and a bachelor’s degree, and job training from a health care professional.

During my undergraduate studies, I spent time exploring the field of exercise science. I endured laborious coursework that molded my character into a strong-willed, disciplined student. As I deepened my knowledge of the human body, my passion for working in health care evolved to new heights. I also grew a fondness for learning new material and concepts. By the end of my undergraduate experience, I knew how to maximize my personal success.
The profession I will be going over is going to be Physical therapy. I will give you an overview of the job and that will consist of what they do, how much they get paid, and different types of conditions and symptoms.
Mobility grants opportunity and lifelong experiences through the gift of exploration and independence. Without autonomy of movement in one’s life, there are struggles accompanied by frustration do to the lack of freedom and ability. It is an orthopedic surgeon’s job to bring function to one’s life even if they have never been granted movement without restraint before. Orthopedic surgeons receive patients whose freedom of movement have been compromised and then return it back to them. Orthopedic surgeons give immeasurable opportunities and life experiences back to their patients because of their perseverance and commitment to their patients and careers.
