In the short film, Words, language is confusing and difficult because Juliet misunderstood Owens way of communicating to others. In the video, from 13:08-13:30,it can be seen that Juliet wants Owen to be with him, but he rejects her not because he wasn’t interested, but because she was ignorant. Juliet believes that Owen would be better off by assimilating to the majority, speaking, hearing, and communicating to others the ‘normal’ way. Owens language is different from Juliet’s, as he expresses himself through sign language and how his body moves to emphasize and intensify how he feels and what he wants to say. In the article, My Story and Advice, it said, “...he would throw stuff at me constantly, flick me in the head, punch me, wipe whatever he picked out his nose on my shirt, call me ugly and stupid, mock me and of course – tell me he would beat me up if I ever fought back”(www.pacerteensagainstbullying.org). This is a dangerous form of communication is bullying. The bully used his voice, and physical actions to show how he feels by harassing him. The bully wanted to dehumanize him, making him feel inferior as possible. This is dangerous because it can affect the person being bullied significantly. It can affect his self esteem, cause depression, anxiety, and etc. Another way it can be dangerous is body gestures because different countries in the world have a different perspective and meaning of a gesture. During class when you said you had studied abroad, your professor taught using both of his middle fingers. Normally in the America it means to, “screw off”. Although, since you were in a different country they don’t take offense to it since they had a different meaning of it. This is also why language can be so difficult and dangerous because all over the world, people have their own way of communicating, and a gesture or action in one country may be significantly differ from
