Developmental delay has played a major role in the life of Joshua Santana. I will elaborate on the child’s present level of academic achievement and functional performance and the academic interventions. I will touch upon the child’s characteristics and behaviors based upon the interviews and observations. Lastly, I will close my case study describing Lev Vygotsky and Albert Bandura's theories of child development.

Background

Christina Santana is a parent of 3 children that attend public school in the Bronx, NY. Her ethnic background is Ecuadorian from her father and Italian from her mother. Grooming, Joshua opened his mouth to brush his teeth but does not do a thorough job. Joshua does not like when his hair is washed. Joshua does not nor allow like nor allow his nose to be wiped and would not blow his nose into a held tissue. During bath time, Joshua was able to turn the water on, obtain the soap and rub his hands together. Next, Joshua will assist with dressing. Joshua was able to put his arms and legs through the clothing, remove pants with elastic waist and unfasten his shoes. Unfortunately, Joshua would not inform Ms. Santana when he was wet or soiled. There were several times where I found Joshua wandering around the classroom. His ability to focus is very minimal. Joshua would walk over to the fire station area or the sink to play with the water. Ms. Johnson has to call him multiple times before Joshua would acknowledge her. She would express to Joshua the consequences he would receive if he did not sit back down. Immediately, Joshua returns to his seat, but with a toy in his hand, which was removed causing a mini tantrum.

Joshua is a sweet yet reserved child who appears to be quiet in nature. He would avoid peers that are aggressive and requires encouragement and verbal support and praise to actively participate in large group activities such as gym and music/ movements. During gym, he refused to participate in the activity called “Helping Hero’s.” The students would have to run to the opposite end and save a stuff animal and run back. When it was Joshua’s turn, he required a level of encouragement in order to participate. In addition, he barely initiates peer or adult interactions unless he is encouraged to do so as
