I chose the movie John Q to apply to the conflict perspective. This movie stars Denzel Washington, Robert Duvall, James Wood, and Ray Liotta. Denzel plays the part of a father, John Archibald, who has been a factory worker for over fifteen years. While attending his son’s, Mikey, softball game Mikey collapses while running to first base. John and his wife rush him to the hospital and discover Mikey’s heart is three times larger than it should be and he will need a heart transplant in order to live. The only problem is the heart transplant costs $ 270,000 and their needs to be a down payment of at least $ 75,000 to put a name on the donor list. With john working in a factory and his wife just being a waitress they clearly do not have that kind of money and are even having a hard time paying their bills at home. They have no stocks or bonds, $ 1,000 in their bank account, and don’t even own their home plus their insurance will not cover the surgery. If Mikey does not undergo surgery he will only have a few months to live. This leads John and his wife to do everything in their power to raise money. They sell their television, car, and furniture along with the church giving them the collection money. Filling for Medicade , welfare, and different insurance does not work and are out of luck at this point. John decides he needs to do something quick or he will lose his son soon. He goes to the head person of cardiology, Dr. Turner, holds a gun to his back and tells him to do something to help his soon. He ends up holding the entire emergency room in hostage and chains the doors shut. He says that if his son’s name is put on the list then he will let the hostages go and no one will get hurt. Relating to the movie, the behavioral expectation that is held consists of if medical treatment is needed a person will receive it if they or their insurance will pay for it. Violation of this is seen when John holds up the hospital until he receives what he is asking for. The societal reaction in response to John is very mixed. Some people see it as wrong and that he should just abide by the rules like everyone else. On the other hand, others see him as a hero for doing such an outlandish act for his family. John makes an announcement to the police that are surrounding the building after he lets three of the hostages go and says “When people are sick they deserve help. I will not bury my son, he will bury me” (John Q). After he says this he strongly wins over the public and people began to realize he does not mean harm and just wants his son to be better.

The adult John comes to civilized society as an experiment by Marx and Mond to see how a "savage" would adapt to civilization. Frankly, he does not adapt very well. He is appalled by the lifestyle and ideas of civilized people, and gets himself into a lot of trouble by denouncing civilization. He loves Lenina very much, but gets very upset at her when she wants to have sex with him. He physically attacks her, and from that point on does not want to have anything to do with her. When his mother dies, he interferes with the "death conditioning" of children by being sad. Finally, his frustrations with the civilized world become too much for him and he decides to take action. He tries to be a sort of a Messiah to a group of Deltas, trying to free them from the effect of soma. He tells them only the truth, but it is not the truth that the Deltas have been conditioned to believe, so to them it is a violent lie and they begin to cause a riot. When the riot is subdued, John is apprehended and taken to have a talk with Mustapha Mond.

This scene plus the others which take place in the hospital show change in the way that men pull together when someone is in need. The hospital scenes also show that men are so accustomed to death, they know when someone is going to die, and can tell the degree of an injury when it happens.
Throughout the text, the reader clearly sees that John has approached the near imprisonment of his wife with very tender and caring words and actions. He always refers to his “little gooses (Charters 228), his darling, and his dear, and he reads her bed time stories. However, the protagonist, as well as the reader, soon begin to see through this act. John may act as if he simply just cares about his wife, and that is why he is putting her through this. But why then does he not listen when she says that she feels worse rather than better? (Charters 232). Because he is not doing it for her at all. He is far more concerned for his career. He is a physician after all, and to have a mentally and physically unstable wife would be tumultuous for his future in that vocation. So he must lock her away in this vacation, away from civilization, so that no one will know. It seems that the protagonist realizes her husbands motives early on, but she is unwilling to believe what she fears is true. She willingly suspends her disbelief of her husband. She says things such as, “Dear John! He loves me very dearly, and hates to have me sick” (Charters 231). In these statements she is not trying to communicate an idea to a reader, but rather attempting desperately to convince herself of the idea. When you meet him you can tell there is something off about him but many people just associated it with his brilliant mind. He later begins showing signs of having a mental illness. Despite his knowledge the illness takes over him and impedes in him doing his work. It gets in the way of his personal and work life. John had to fight the hallucinations and take medication for him to be well. It was hard to see such a brilliant intelligent man go from one extreme to another. It was like as soon as he had his mental out break all was taken from him. With the right medication and with John being compliant in taking his medications he is able to control his schizophrenia and hallucinations and try to return to his old self. With the help of his wife, friends and healthcare team he is able to remember what life was like before his mental illness

John’s lack of having an open mind to his wife’s thoughts and opinions and his constant childish like treatment of his wife somehow emphasizes this point, although, this may not have been his intention. The narrator felt strongly that her thoughts and feelings were being disregarded and ignored as stated by the narrator “John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him” (Gilman 115), and she shows her despise of her husband giving extra care to what he considers more important cases over his wife’s case with a sarcastic notion “I am glad my case is not serious!” (Gilman 115). It is very doubtful that John is the villain of the story, his good intentions towards doing everything practical and possible to help his wife gain her strength and wellbeing is clear throughout the story.
With these components at the forefront, productivity presents itself in a crucial way. This dystopian world is built around constantly being productive, often leaving its citizens how they would personally benefit from helping their peers and associates; more specifically, how helping their peers and associates would benefit the World State. Mustapha Mond mentions this with his hypnopædic phrase, “But everyone belongs to everyone else” (Huxley 40). When Bernard brings John to London, John’s initial purpose is one hidden from him. Bernard searches to embarrass the Director for his hypocrisy by outing him as John’s father. When this mission is completed and the Director resigns, John’s significance severely decreases. He misses all chances at making connections and being productive and his lashing out on other citizens threatens his ability to continue to exist stably in society. With no true purpose of existing in the machine that is the World State, John does what he believes will be the most productive thing he can do for society and takes his own life. Doing so exemplifies how John resembles a Christ-like figure, as his death for the improvement of the world reiterates that he would rather die in isolation than live life only as a small part of a much bigger
...n his path to redemption. In order to save his life, he is tempted into admitting that he is indeed in league with the Devil. But if done he would be telling a terrible lie and is also blackening the names of all the other prisoners who've refused to give in. When John is asked to actually sign his name, he refuses. The act of putting his name to paper is just too much. By signing his name he would have signed away his soul. Though he would have saved his life, his goodness would've been forever out of his reach.
Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, exemplifies the idea that in an ever-growing modern world, one who demonstrates traditional values about love will be unable to cope up with the questionable morals and differentiating, controversial values present, seen through John’s difficult experience in the Brave New World. In the novel, there is a severe disconnect between what John was taught and the ideals of the Brave New World, which encouraged ruthless, unemotional, and quick interactions with someone found attractive instead of a stable relationship with a loved one. As a result, John struggled greatly to try to adapt to the Brave New World while still trying to maintain his own values, and proved to be unfit to stay there. It is evident that John could have never survived in such a society, due to the great difference in between both of their morals, and the Brave New World’s disapproval of his own values, seen through John’s reaction to the recreational activities, the people in the Brave New World’s mockery of his most favorite pieces of literature, which formed his ideas on love, and finally in his own relationship with Lenina. However, while John’s downward spiral of his mental and emotional state in the Brave New World and his unwillingness to accept their values cause him to leave London, his final conformity and unwilling acceptance to the Brave New World ideals cause the final tragedy at the end of the novel, revealing that he would have never been able to survive in this society, for he was bound to be tainted by their values.
The Board of Directors at the hospital informed John Q. Archibald that his medical insurance would not cover the $250k heart transplant surgery, and if he could not come up with at least $75k, his son Michael will die. John Q. Archibald tried selling most of his belongings, filing an appeal with his insurance company, reaching out to the church, and going to the news, but he did not acquire enough money needed for the surgery. John Q. Archibald’s wife informed him that the hospital will be releasing their son to die at home, and she demands that he “does something.”

In the end we find out that John had not raped and killed the two little girls he was found with, but instead he had happened upon them and tried to bring them back to life; only it was too late. Seeing the fantastical nature of the situation the guards who knew the truth were unable to free John of the charges he was facing and they had to kill him anyways.
