John Dillinger, born on June 22, 1903, grew up in the Oak Hill Section of Indianapolis. His mother died when he was 3 years old, and his father’s new wife was resented by Dillinger. After years of getting in trouble as a teenager Dillinger dropped out of school and started to work at a machine shop in Indianapolis. The Encyclopedia of World Crimes how even though he was a good, intelligent worker he was getting bored and usually decided to stay out at night. Dillinger’s father moved his family just outside of Mooresville, Indiana. Dillinger really didn’t become any better with rural life and he continued to be a wild boy. After attempting his first robbery at a grocery store in his home town John, age 21, was imprisoned for 9 years until 1933. Even after being imprisoned for nine years John didn’t learn from his mistakes robbing a bank in Bluffton, Ohio quickly after being released. He was arrested by Dayton and was then held in Lima county jail pre-trial. Found on John was a plan for a prison break that was actually used four days after John’s arrest. The prison break included eight of Dillinger’s friends who used weapons that had been smuggled into their cells to escape from the Indiana State Prison during this break two guards were killed. …show more content…

After being asked for their identification, one of Dillinger’s friends pulled a gun, shot the sheriff and beat him until he was unconscious. They left the sheriff to die, locked up the deputy and sheriff’s wife, and freed Dillinger.
