Was Harry Houdini a spy? This question is one of many people ask themselves about the mysterious man that was Harry Houdini. He was a unique man, who had a very shady existence. He certainly had the abilities to escape bad situations of he in fact was a spy, but no one really knows for sure whether he was or not. The questions he raises are just tiny chips in the tapestry Houdini painted into history. For his entire life, Houdini claimed that he was born on April 6, 1874 in Appleton Wisconsin. The fact was, however, that he was born on March 24, 1874, in Budapest, Hungary. His father was a religious teacher , his mother a stay at home wife. He had six siblings that survived adulthood. His father emigrated to America and changed the spelling …show more content…
He reportedly dies of Appendicitis after a fan took his offer to punch him in the gut, and punched him harder than they probably should have. Most people, however believe that the fan did it on purpose, knowing that Harry was sick. He had been feeling bad that day, according to his colleges and wife. After he escaped from his chinese water torture cell, he collapsed and was sent to the hospital. His appendix ruptured and he tragically died in 1926. After his death, his wife tried to conduct a seance to contact his spirit. They had made a secret code years before in case he died before her. He did not believe in spirits, as he had tried to contact his dead mother and failed. The people that helped him contact his mother had either been frauds or had not been able to. "I do not believe that ghosts or spirits exist.” He would say later on. To this day, seances are conducted to contact the deceased Harry Houdini. Long after Houdini’s death, people have loved his magic shows and have been fascinated by his great escapes. Many magicians now idolize him, such as David Copperfield. When we think of magic today, our minds usually go to Houdini rather than the great magicians we have today. This is, of course, because Houdini shaped the history of magic throughout the world. He was one of the world's first most memorable magicians that we will all treasure for, hopefully,
Fact: Harry Houdini was actually born Ehrich Weiss. He was born on March 24, 1874, in Budapest, Hungary. When he was young he would tell people that his birthday was on April 6, because that’s what his mom told him. For the first four years of Ehrich’s life, him, his three brothers, and his mother, Cecilia, lived in Budapest. When Ehrich was two years old
The article Houdini indicates “He could hold his breath for an extraordinary amount of time.Additionally, he was strong and determined. Also “He was not afraid to dislocate joints, such as a shoulder,or even rip flesh…” This takes tons of practice and hard work and determination. The article Houdini applies”They accused him of deceit, stating that he cheated with trap doors or only appeared to be nailed in a box or locked in chains” this shows Houdini was put down many times and people didn’t believe in him, but Houdini persevered to continue on to achieve his goal and ignored what others said. Clearly, people shouldn’t care about others and should work hard and
This book is titled, The Secrets of Harry Bright by Joseph Wambaugh. It was published in 1985. I have read other novels by Joseph Wambaugh. He is a very intriguing author. He has a way of capturing his audience that is paralleled with few authors. In essence, he relates his writings to everyday life woven into crime, drugs and sex. It appeals to a more mature audience, which can appreciate Wambaugh’s rough portrayal of urban life. My first thought of the book was it lacked historical significance. Upon further thought it became apparent to me that history isn’t simply war or catastrophes; it’s an accumulation of everything that has preceded the time we live now. This novel made many references to Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter and even William McKinley. It also viewed America as it was in the 1980’s. A time sometimes forgotten or often neglected to be mentioned. Through this novel you begin to grasp this time period and develop a sense of appreciation for it, because it did take place and is apart of our history. I believe Joseph Wambaugh is one of the forerunners in enlightening the American Public on a period, which deserves more recognition. And I believe strongly that Wambaugh set out to highlight this decade in our history and he most certainly succeeded.
Let’s go back to his roots, in Brooklyn, New York. He was born April 29, 1948 and spent his youth there with his father (a salesman) and mother (a seamstress) and sister. Perhaps everyone has heard of the most illustrious Magician of all time, Harry Houdini. He was a man that inspired many people to practice magic for the purpose entertaining others. The artifact that I’ve chosen is an advertisement for one of Houdini's card performance. In this advertisement Houdini is depicted as the “King of Cards”, he was probably given this name because of his superior skills in the arts of illusions and mastery of card tricks. Personally, this advertisement gives off a mysterious type of feeling, and it was most likely made this way to attract curious viewers of Houdini’s title.

Every child has a dream of one day reaching their goals they have set. Harry Houdini was one of those children. He moved with his family around the world, only to end up in New York City where Harry started it all. He went from a little boy performing his own circus to the greatest escape artist to ever live. He is proof that your dreams can never be too big, hard work and imagination can get you there. Harry Houdini will forever be known for his achievements and magical illusions. One day I too hope to reach my own goals like Harry Houdini
According to Chopin’s biographer Karasowki (1906), Frédéric François Chopin was born in Zelazowa Wola, a village west of Warsaw, Poland. According to the parish baptismal record, which was discovered in 1892, it gives his birthday as 22 February 1810, but March 1st 1810 was stated by the composer and his family as his birthday, according to Chopin in a letter of January 16th 1833 (Karasowski, 1906).
Spiritualism has been documented in existence from ancient Egyptian and Indian cultures, but its modern form began in 1848. Margaret Fox and her younger sister Catie grew up in Hydesville, a small town in western New York, a section of America well known for its deviant behavior in this time period (Moore, p.5). These girls heard thumping noises in their farmhouse, and developed a system of communication with the spirit by clapping. They learned the ghost was Charles Rosa, who claimed his throat was slit by the home's former owner, John Bell, and he had been buried in the cellar (Guiley). When they dug up the cellar floor, it contained teeth, hair, and bones.
We have seen magic as a form of entertainment, from making someone disappear, to sawing a girl in half. But all great illusions have an explanation. “Magic, as we have seen, is about power- a seemingly magical power used and expressed by a skilled actor to create the illusion of miraculous happenings’. But the most mysterious part of magic is how these miraculous happenings are performed. The real power of magic lies within the native effects themselves (Blackstone, 117).
