Imagine growing up in a era filled with worthy opponents trying to achieve the same outcome in life as you are but having living conditions and just a general lifestyle changes and occurrences preventing and making it harder to fulfill your potential dream… this is how the life of Johann Sebastian Bach unraveled. Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician born in 1685 of the Baroque period and is famously known for his instrumental compositions such as Prelude and Fugue No. 2 in C minor, Toccato and Fugue in D minor, and Magnificat just to name a few. But, because these boys were also choristers in the various churches of Leipzig, Bach was also responsible for the music in the town’s four churches; St. Nicholas, St. Thomas, St. Matthew (the “New”) and St. Peters. Bach himself was personally responsible to direct the music at St. Thomas and St. Nicholas. On the average he had about 55 boys in the Thomas school choir, who alternated singing at the two churches, one cantata every two weeks. Bach also supervised a prefect who directed second-string choirs at the other two churches. While not obligated to fulfill this function, Bach was able to pick up some extra income writing and performing music for special occasions such as weddings and funerals. In an average week Bach would perform nearly every day. Needless to say, these performances were usually poorly rehearsed (sometimes not at all) and often fell apart (1996 Timothy A. Smith). Bach had worked very hard for those years, and every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday there was choir rehearsals. Although there was not much time to for rehearsals much, Bach managed to write five yearly runs.This means that Bach wrote about one cantata per week, and for anyone that knows music knows that would be strenuous on anyone past or present. Bach had a passion for what he did, the message of bravery he made throughout the cities are still remembered till this day. He made an impact on the way music was played and listened to, one he probably wouldn’t know would last this long. Coming from a life of what Bach lived through each and every day, he didn’t understand the immense impact that his music would hold in history. Bach made a great tribute to the world in his time and even now in the present, but not even the greatest can live on forever. In 1740, Bach’s eyesight started to diminish, and even with two eye operations this could not stop Johann to go completely
