Jim Hawkins' Motivations to Find the Treasure in Treasure Island

Jim Hawkins motivations were primarily to go look for the treasure and find it. Jim Hawkins doesn’t let his young age stop him from going out and adventuring the world. At a young age Jim Hawkins shows a great amount of courage, determination, motivation, and leadership skills. Jim Hawkins showed a lot of maturity when he was faced with physical and mental challenges on his journey to search for the treasure. In the first couple of chapters Jim is described to be an easily frightened boy who is really close to his home and family. After his father dies and he goes on this adventure, Jim starts to think for himself and shows initiative. Jim makes a lot of mistakes, but he learns from them, which shows that he is maturing. He grows up quickly during this trip, starting as the cabin boy but eventually naming himself the new captain after he takes the ship back from the pirates. His tendency to act on smarts and his growing self-awareness also shows that he is caught between two worlds between childhood and adulthood. One of the many ways Jim Hawkins tries to find the treasure is leaving his crew members to explore the island and try to find the treasure on his own. “I was so pleased at having given the slip to Long John, that I began to enjoy myself and look around me with some interest on the strange land that I was in.” (pg 59). Leaving Long John and the rest of his crew has made his journey easier and more relaxing. “I now felt for the first time the joy of exploration.”(pg 59). When faced with danger he was going to call help for from Long John his crew but his fear of Long John and his hunger to try to find the treasure allows him to stick with his plan. “I was within an ace of calling for help. But the mere fact that ... ... middle of paper ... ...im decides to tell Long John everything he did to try to ruin his plan to find the treasure he spares Jim’s life even though the other pirates want him dead. Long John also decides to stand by Jim even though he has a feeling his crew is going to take him out of his captain position. Jim shows a lot of courage and that he’s a man of his word when he is given the opportunity to run away but instead he decides to stay because he gave Long John his word that he will help him through his trial. Jim is taken to where the treasure is believed to be but when they dig up the area there was no treasure. The treasure is later discovered at site where Ben Gunn has hidden it. The reasons I mentioned earlier steers Jim in the right direction of the treasure because of him not trusting Long John but instead using his smarts and his very high maturity level to find the treasure.
