Many people who have read the novel Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, may believe that one of the main characters, Huck Finn, is the main “hero” of the story. Though Huck is an admirable character in the novel, Jim is the true hero. Without Jim, Huck would be a character not worth mentioning. Jim is to Huck as water is to life. Jim is the most important character in Huck finn, and the true hero because of his selflessness, his bravery, and he displays a strong moral compass and knows what is wrong and right. Jim is by far the most selfless character in the novel. He often does little things for Huck that are very nice and selfless, such as when they were supposed to keep watch at night. Jim would keep watch during his shift and Huck’s shift allowing Huck to get more rest: “ I went to sleep, and Jim didn’t call me when it was my turn. He often done that.” (139). The quote clearly points towards Jim’s selflessness by letting Huck sleep through his shift. Jim always helps Huck with even the smallest things, he’s always there for him, like a father. Jim remembers a time when he told his daughter to shut a door, when she doesn’t listen Jim slaps her. Jim feels very bad for what he did when he learns that she is deaf and dumb. Jim cries and says that he will never forgive himself for the rest of his life: “...’Oh, de po’ little thing! De Lord God Amighty fogive po’ ole Jim, kaze he never gwyne to fogive hisself as long’s he live!’ Oh, she was plumb deef en dumb, Huck, plumb deef en dumb—en I’d ben a-treat’n her so!” (140). Jim knows that what he did was very wrong and he won’t ever forgive himself. This helps show that Jim has a good sense of what's wrong and what's right, which helps provide moral support for Huck throughout the whole entire
