James (or Jim) Bowie, known for his Bowie Knife, was a legend among even more legends. His life was amazing, and his legacy was extraordinary; his death saved many lives, as did his life. He was an excellent fighter and won many battles, but he had a battle with drinking that he could not quite overcome. Jim also had a pretty short temper. However, he has a tremendous history about him. Jim Bowie, the ninth child born to Rezin Bowie and Elve Ap-Catesby Jones was born April 10, 1796 in Logan County, Kentucky, but lived most of his life in Louisiana (his family actually moved quite a bit). After they saw his knife, men asked blacksmiths and cutlers to make a knife just like Jim Bowie's, which they called a "big butcher knife." While at the Alamo, he experienced a battle with drinking that he could not quite overcome; It caused him to be ill. Bowie had in fact been stabbed in the chest in an earlier battle which had caused an original problem with his lungs. One problem led to another and pneumonia had eventually struck Bowie with its dangerous blast. Pneumonia disabled Bowie, and he was confined to his room at the time of his death on March 6, 1836 at the Battle of the Alamo. The funny thing was that Bowie legitimately asked for some alcohol while stuck in his bed; the even funnier thing is that he got his wish.
