Jack Welch once said, “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” This quote summarizes what it is to be a great leader. The goal is always to improve others, not for one's own selfish desires. It takes a plethora of qualities to be a great leader, but the three most important characteristics are: courage, selflessness, and optimism. Leaders constantly face challenges that take massive courage to overcome. Martin Luther King Jr., for example, was one of them. No matter the violence or hatred he encountered he always pressed forward with the benefits of other people in mind. It was unpopular for blacks to take up for what they believed in, but he had the boldness to do it anyway. Just like King, Rosa Parks stood up for what she believed in, no matter the cost. She sat courageously, knowing the penalties of not getting up, for the sake of every blacks civil rights. Knowing there was a high possibility of going to jail, she stood firm. An additional brave leader was Moses from the Bible. Moses escaped the slavery of Egypt to lead his people across the Red Sea. Others mocked and ridiculed him, but he knew that in the end that was the way for him and his people. …show more content…

Gandhi, The Father of India, exhibited this well. He always put the citizens of India first. In doing this, Ghandi inspired many to take a stand for what they believed was right. Similarly, Mother Teresa dedicated her life to helping others. She went out of her way to help the underprivileged thrive. Others saw the impact she was making and soon followed. Out of all these great leaders, Jesus is the perfect illustration of what it means to put others first. Jesus came here to serve, and in doing so he gained followers of many.
