While my family is not Italian, I have a significant appreciation for Italian food. Perhaps this is because my family has lived in Canada for many generations, so we have a huge variety of food inspired by other countries. I actually had an amazing Italian meal last night, which was fitting after all of our course readings I had done earlier. I was lucky enough to have spaghetti with homemade sauce and meatballs. I really noticed how the ingredients were few and simple, but so fresh and delicious that nothing more was required. I love how Italian food is all about the quality of ingredients, because I feel this is something that can often be overlooked in North America with our fast-food obsession.

In comparison, I traveled to Southeast Asia last spring and found the food to be very different to what we are learning about Italian cuisine. The meals were packed with ingredients and more often than not they were extremely spicy. While I love spicy food and can certainly appreciate this, the simplicity and consistancy of Italian cuisine is what always brings me back!

However, I have enjoyed meals at the homes of Italian friends. It is incredible how food is experienced so differently between cultures. The first thing I noticed is how there were so many options of what I would consider "main" dishes, like chicken, pasta, or fish, along with multiple sides. Everything seemed to be enjoyed in abundance and the hosts wanted to be sure every guest tried a little bit of each dish. It was fantastic! I also noticed a sign on the wall that said "eat slowly, laugh loudly" which I think is very stereotypically Italian.
