Have you ever wondered if technology is making us stupid or is it making us smarter? I think technology is making us stupid because if we get distracted in our phones we understand less, remember less, and learn less with our phones. For example,on article A, says”our life is now more efficiently cheaper, simpler and faster thanks to rise of apps and 24-7 connectivity”. According to the article, I think that Yes, Google or technology is making us stupid.
In other words I say Yes, Google is making us stupid because when we use our computers and our cellphones all the time, we’re always distracted due to the technology. The technology that we used back then was less distracting because in school we would use books and paper to write and find
Rhetorical Analysis Writers always write in different styles in order to attract readers. Every piece of writing has different types of rhetorical methods. For example, “If Technology Is Making Us Stupid, It’s Not Technology’s Fault,” there are different types of techniques used to appeal to writers. In parts of the essay it has logic which is known for using logos. The writer uses very strong emotions which is known as pathos.
Advancements in technology have strived to make life easier for so many people. In most cases, the advancements have achieved its goal, but in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas Carr questions if the improvements in society have unintentionally hindered our thought process overall. Carr begins the article by providing personal instances when his concentration seemed to diminish due to the internet. He explains how he now loses interest when reading lengthy portions, his mind just can’t seem to remain connected to his readings. He then proceeds to talk about how today’s life is surrounded by the internet, and explains the pros and cons of it. The negative side of it is that his mind now wonders off when seeking information from
If only my local library could hold the vast quantity of information that my hand held smart phone does. Carr insinuates that Google (and the internet) is making us stupid. I say they are making us lazy. In “Is Google Making Us Stupid” by Nicholas Carr informatively states that with the advancement of technology, Google search engine, and the internet we are become more distracted—with all the different forms of flash media, the amount of hyper-links after hyper-link after hyper-links, and clickable adds-- in turn we are doing less critical reading by way of the internet as opposed to a printed book. Being able to glance over several articles in hour’s verses days looking through books; being able to jump from link to link in order to get the information you need, never looking at the same page twice has decrease out deep thinking and reading skills. Now days, all forms of reading, e.g. newspaper, magazine, etc. are small amount of reading to get the main idea of what’s going on and if you would like more information you will have to go to another page to do so. In the end, C...
In my opinion, Google does not make us stupid like Carr suggests in his article. Google may make us seem lazy because we do less reading and physical activity. Information found on websites helps people become smarter and able to learn subjects easier in school. In the end, Carr never really provides scientific evidence that shows the brain’s circuitry having actually changed. I generally agree with Gladstone’s views and think the mirror metaphor is a useful way of talking about the media’s role in a free society. I also think that the computer and the Internet have enhanced our abilities and increased our processing speeds for acquiring knowledge: making the human brain more efficient in multitasking. The young people who are growing up with this new technology will expand it’s future. Gladstone makes the case that media distributors, even ones that seem indestructible, are ultimately subject to the preferences of their audience: us. Citizens should take up the responsibility of learning about and interacting with valuable media sources and reject those that pander to the lowest common
Humans have been creating tools that allow us to be do things that would be otherwise impossible since the beginning of our existence. The ability to use and develop new tools is what sets us apart from all other animals. Yet it seems that ever since these tools started being created there were also people that feared these new tools and claimed that they are bad for the human race. The present fear of new technology is illustrated in the essay “Is Google Making us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr. In this essay Carr argues that the internet and other new technologies are changing the way we think in a negative way. Carr claims that new technology is making our generation stupid. In opposition the article “Smarter Than You Think” by Clive Thompson
The use of technology has not made people dumber, but has made everyone think differently. The fact that the majority of people turn to the Internet to find facts does not make those facts less valuable than if they were found in a book. Today, people process much more information than people used to because technology has increased the amount of information that can be viewed. Due to the Internet, people have access to much more information. “Since the 1930s IQ scores have been on the rise” (Begley) With the rise of technology, IQ scores have risen. How can technology be making us dumb?
Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid” and Sherry Turkle’s “How Computers Change the Way We Think” both discuss the influence of technology to their own understanding and perspective. The first work by Nicholas Carr is about the impact technology has on his mind. He is skeptical about the effect it could cause in the long term of it. He gives credible facts and studies done to prove his point. While Sherry Turkle’s work gives a broad idea of the impact of technology has caused through the years. She talks about the advances in technology and how it is changing how people communicate, learn and think. In both works “Is Google Making Us Stupid” and “How Computers Change the Way We Think” the authors present
Carr, N. (2008, Jul. - Aug.). Is google making us stupid?. The Atlantic, 1. Retrieved February 14, 2012, from http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2008/07/is-google-making-us-stupid/6868/
As the times are changing so is the way people attain information. The evolution of technology is ever-changing and advancing. Text books went from being our prime source of information to decorations in our homes. But is this new source of information making us stupid? I am of course riffing to the tech giant and enormous informational hub that is Google. A quick motion of typing a word into the search bar will yield you extensive answers to almost any question. Is this ease of gathering information hindering our abilities. My answer to this question is absolutely not Google is not making people stupid. Google is a tool in which people use to enhance their knowledge making them more intelligent.
Technology has been developing for years and has shaped our world. From the invention of irrigation systems, to the modern cellphone, technology has both pros and cons. But as you’ll see, the positive effects outweigh the negative, as we discuss common misconceptions, the practicality, and taking a look at the counter argument. Is technology making us smarter?
Those with this perspective think that technology completely stands on its own without influence or change from society. The article Google is Making Us Stupid is a reading within the lecture that shows a dystopian view of technological determinism. Carr (2008) blames that googles simplicity has affected individual’s ability to read long books or articles and has changed the way humans process things. This article is an accurate illustration of technological determinism because it argues that technology by its self (google) is shaping the way society thinks (making them
Technology is unavoidable in our modern lifestyle. You wake up, you use technology; you use technology while cooking, while eating, while driving. While you’re lying in bed before you fall asleep, you use technology, technology wakes you up in the morning. Is all the technology around you good for you, or is it harmful to your health? Was our society healthier or safer before all the advancements? So many questions and concerns about all of the technology we crave, but there are very few people who know the answers. Technology affects all parts of human life. It can create jobs, motivate people to get active, and assist people in learning, but this does not balance out that there are dangers that follow the use of technology.
There used to be a time where students would have the responsibility of learning the material at hand by using their memories instead of depending on technology. Now, calculators do all the hard math problems, spell check takes care of grammar, and books are becoming fossils because who needs a book for research when you can have a siri? Kids used to be outside everyday playing sports or riding bikes, but now their eyes are attached to their video games, while their butts are glued to the couch. And don`t forget that in order to get a date people actually had to talk to each other face to face instead of relying on internet dating services or apps like Tinder. It`s hard to believe isn`t it? Society has become so dependent on technology that it wouldn`t know how to function without it. So the question at hand is, is smarter technology making us dumber? In this paper, the three perspectives being observed are how technology is depriving society of the ability to be mentally independent, how it is making people incapable to have a physical relationship with each other, and how people are being pushed into having an unhealthy lifestyle because of it.
Finally I am able to describe my opinion in the situation, if whether or not society is becoming too dependent on technology. I believe that most of the times technology is helpful in carrying on everyday life, but at times technology isn’t really needed. Technology is used a lot to communicate, but some families don’t even spend time together and later just fall apart. To me medical technology is a very important factor to account for in this situation. Because it can either kill someone or save them. Education has also been brought up into this argument for helping students and affecting students. Family separation, medical advances, and education play a major rule in my decision toward this topic. Technology is a helpful tool for many people while to others it is just a distraction. Technology will never stop being developed but some of the thing being created and how they are used are really not the nessessary
This is now the way that our world functions, we are able to quickly search information and form new ideas because of this site. The way our world learns is changing, and we all need to adapt to this new way. Though some people suspect that Google is making us stupid, it is only because not all of us have become adapted to this new learning technique. We are fortunate enough to have whatever we are looking for right at our fingertips but, because of the fact that we have so much information that is so easily accessible we need to be able to absorb the information being given to us. Google can’t become a temporary source of quick information that is thrown away as soon as our thought changes, it’s a learning tool, that is allowing us to know and do more. It makes life easier for us and clears up time for the more important things in life, experiences.
