Is Abortion Morally Wrong

About 1.4 million government regulated abortions occur each year in the United States. Ever since the Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade in 1973, over 53 million abortions have been performed (Abortion Pros, 2014). The question of whether or not women should be allowed to take part in having an abortion is a controversial topic and is argued among politicians and citizens countrywide today.
Abortion is a gruesome procedure in which the fetus of a developing human child is killed and extracted from a woman’s uterus. There are two types of abortion, surgical and medical (Abortion Pros, 2014). Why? Because two questions remain: Is abortion morally wrong? Should abortion be legal or illegal? (Introduction to, 2014). First and foremost, abortion is murder. Some people argue that life does not begin at conception, but at birth. The human zygote is composed of human DNA and human molecules, making it undeniably human (Rob Schwarzwalder, 2014). The unique zygote is a whole new, individual which separates it from its mother. For an organism to be established as biological life it must metabolize, grow, react to stimuli, and reproduce in which the human zygote does all (Rob Schwarzwalder, 2014). The assumptions are not true that the Supreme Court ruled that the court made abortion legal in the first trimester only and that it is subject to substantial limits and regulations. Abortions are usually performed at any patient’s request or convenience (Rob Schwarzwalder, 2014). A survey shows that 48% of abortions are performed on women because they “cannot afford a baby”, they “are not ready to be a parent” or “it is bad timing”. Two percent of women said they “got raped” or “they were doing it for someone else”. (Rob Schwarzwalder, 2014). Should the government condone abortions if most are performed for personal convenience? There are many reasons as to why abortions should be outlawed. The psychological effects on women and their loved ones are sometimes traumatic. Abortion promotes the fact that human life can simply be thrown away at a person’s convenience (Abortion Pros, 2014). It is very contradicting that abortion is legal and a fetus is not considered a living human, yet when a pregnant woman is killed it is recognized as a double homicide. Citizens expect the law to protect the rights of not only living people, but of unborn babies (Lyons,
