Intellectual Incarceration
As the landscape of education in America is constantly changing so too should the schools. Innovative and flexible school designs are paramount in the American educational reform conversation. School buildings are the tangible realizations of such reform concerns. Initially concerned with the quality of the learning environment, access to daylight and fresh air were the catalyst in a movement to improve the overall quality of education. While the reform movement has evolved to focus primarily on the student and their varied ways of learning, our schools are required to reflect such theories. As students have moved out of the one room school houses and into more populated school campuses, the environment in which they were to learn in changed vastly as well.
Over the course of the reform movement, certain necessities, such as access to the outdoors, fresh air, and the utilization of daylight, have been identified and required to achieve a highly successful educational setting. The polarizing force in school design reform has been the collaboration of educational professionals and the architect. The importance of the architect in school reform cannot be overlooked but he is powerless to exact some lasting impact without input from those who utilize his work put every day. As education has grown by leaps and bounds there are still many avenues that can be traveled to ensure positive reform lasts. Our current project, "The W.J. Bryan Primary Learning Center", under construction, is located a block away from the main building, to house a pre-k and eight kindergarten classes. In addition, an administrator, lead teacher, cafeteria, and complete office staff will staff the new center. Its doors are scheduled to open to staff, students, and parents in April, 1998.
I believe that geography is a significant subject in the primary national curriculum because it supports children to develop an understanding of the places in the world and the diverse range of people who live in it. For me, this is an important aspect to learning because it enables children to be globally aware. According to the DFES (Great Britain. Department for Education and Skills, 2005a) education plays a vital role in helping children to recognise their contribution and responsibilities as citizens of the global community and equips them with skills to make informed decisions and take responsible actions. In a recent geography seminar, I collaboratively planned a lesson for KS2, involving children taking a visit to Seaton, a local beach in Cornwall to compare and contrast the area through photographs after recent storm damage. The Royal Geographical Society (2014) suggests through the use of enquiry-based fieldwork, children can gain first hand experiences of physical processes. Mass incarceration may not seem like major issue to people, but according to article by Melinda D. Anderson it is causing the life of some children also their families. The growth of incarceration of black people presumably seems to be increasing, particularly more within the US. According to Naacp.org, “African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites” therefore as those people are being incarcerated, it’s causing problems not only for them but also for their families as well. So as to improve the K-12 education, the United States needs to redesign the high schools. The initiative by the president to redesign the high schools is significant in encouraging the schools to use the available resources. Schools together with their partners should take into using the resources that exist effectively. These resources are in the local, state and the federal so as to transform the experience in the high schools for the youth through energy of the whole school redesign. Overcoming these tasks and creating worthy public architecture is a challenge designers try to accomplish, but are rarely successful. My study in New York provided me with a unique opportunity to observe the relationship between architectural design and the city. Through the exploration of different sites each semester, including site investigation, data collection, discussions on various programs and projects, I gradually came to the realize that every site has its own specificity and unique flavor. The specificity of the site not only reflects the traffic and terrain of the surrounding environment, but also highlights the culture and socioeconomic development of a community. Architectural design is based on such a type of specificity to act as a feedback mechanism for its contextual environment through dealing with the specific problems in different sites.
These days, school safety is one of the most important parts of running a good school. So how can we make our school, safer and a better school overall?
