In God We Trust: Our Nation's Currency

America is a country of conflict and compromise. Our nation’s motto was founded on the principles of God. Our nation’s motto was introduced during the civil war. At that time, it became our motto, “In God We Trust” and it was used on United States(U.S.) on its currency. The controversy quickly began as some people questioned the use of the motto or the use of “God” on government currency. They thought that there was no separation between church and state. The United States government allowed the motto to be introduced in an official capacity and a majority of individuals involved were in full support. Those that were against it had their minds set on seeking another motto that would unify the country. Although the negative responses, the government enacted the term to be placed on all US currency. The long-term goal was that “In God We trust” became an essential part of our U.S. history. Psalm 118:8 says, “It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans”. Our founders based our nation on religion. This final changes were in 1955, when Representative Charles E. Bennet sponsored the bill that added the words “In God We Trust” to both the nation's coins and currency. The law was passed by the 84th Congress which was also signed by President Dwight D. The founders of the United States were very active in their faith, and relied on faith (Religion in American Life). The country was assembled on the Christian beliefs and putting ‘In God We Trust’ was a continuation of this. This changed the way people thought about the founding of the U.S. A new idea was brought about when President Eisenhower passed a law, and this made people think again about the structure in the nation.
