School Food: Improving School Lunches at Hillsborough High School The battle between schools and their students over the lunches served in the cafeteria is way beyond its expiration date. Before nutritionists and dieticians were aware of the growing obesity rates due to unhealthy diets, , students were served greasy lunches saturated with high fat and sodium levels. Government involvement on what schools could serve their students was minimal, however, drastically changed due to the increasing obesity rates, and the government began promoting healthier eating habits.. The USDA establishes school legislations so the breakfast and lunches served for students are promoting healthier eating practices to fight off diseases caused by unhealthy meals. In an effort to deciding how to handle the obesity rate incrementation, the government limited sugar consumption in several local and state districts since sugar was the main source of the problem. Several food companies have aided in promoting healthier eating habits, “Working with the Better Business Bureau, 16 food companies commit to marketing healthier food to kids, including limiting sugar, KFC introduces 64-ounce sodas” (Clemmitt). Food companies are taking the initiative in promoting kids health, although at the same time, chain food restaurants are promoting their products to gain profit. The government is working its way into promoting fresh, nutrient rich food, while fast food places are trying to get more people to buy their food. Albeit, schools are taking the authority in having healthier food choices, although, in schools like HHS, french fries, pizza, buffalo wings are still being served. There are salads available for students but not all students are lining up to get their side of greens. Even so, nutritionists believe that children will learn to get used to the healthier meals served at school (Keiner). Michelle Obama, along with dieticians and nutritionists, believe that with healthier meals at school, it will make way for a decrease in obesity rates as kids will develop healthy eating habits. However, the students only have lunch at school and have different meals at home for breakfast and lunch. Nevertheless, children’s eating habits come from at home, and with healthier lunches, it will likely be hated by children as they are not used to eating
