Throughout the week at the playgroup I witnessed a wide variety of different types of communication. Mainly verbal and written communication is used in the playgroup between the staff and the children, as well as the staff communicating with the children it is also very important for the staff to communicate with the children’s parents and carers.
Verbal Communication –
I witnessed how important verbal communication is when communicating with children, it was the most effective type of communication I witnessed when staff were communicating with the young children at the playgroup, this was used the most because it was the easiest way for the playgroup leaders to get the children to understand what they were trying to tell them. This will help the child to know what way they should respond. They were very careful, when talking to the children, to maintain a relaxed and friendly tone of voice, also they kept the volume of the conversation low so they did not scare the children by shouting at them when they did nothing and by using a slow pace, the leaders allowed the children time to listen to what was being said and understand what the leaders were trying to tell them.
Every day at pickup time the staff were very cheerful when standing at the door when they were talking to the children’s parents/carers whilst waiting for the child to come to the door. The parents/carers were always willing to talk to the staff because the staff were always friendly and had a relaxed tone whilst talking to them. I think this is a good example of how effective their communication is at the playgroup.
When the staff were speaking to the children and their parents/ carers, they were always using a low volume and a slow pace, unless a child was misbehaving, then the leaders had to raise their voice to the child so they knew they had done something wrong, this will help them to know that they should not repeat this action.
