1. I chose to do advanced standing as I am mentally and emotionally prepared to further my education during a time that will provide me with the most success. So far, I have been very proud of my grades in the social work undergraduate program. It takes a lot of determination and skills and to get through school and be successful. In becoming a professional social worker, cultural pluralism is an essential part of gaining respect when working with clients. Growing up I have always had compassion for everyone around me. Individuals come from many different backgrounds and it is important to respect that. I know what it is like to have your background define who you are. I have experienced this first hand coming from a Hispanic family. This experience has opened my eyes to Cultural pluralism. In being open-minded, I will always have a respect for my client’s background and people of all populations. I would like to relate the experiences I have had growing up to create an understanding on my views of ethnicity, spirituality, age, disability, socio-economic status, and sexual orientation. a. ETHNICITY: I come from a Mexican American background which has introduced me to many aspects of cultural pluralism. From personal experience, I know what it is like to be a minority. I grew up in a predominantly white community and knew I was different from my peers. As a result I have become sensitive and open to different ethnicities. Each culture has several different values and traditions that differ from my own. I know personally, my culture emphasizes family and tradition. This may not be true for all clients I work with.
