Do you ever just feel like giving up but something made you want to keep going? Or you were just so passionate about something and did everything possible in order to be successful at it? If you can relate or answer these questions with a yes, you’ve demonstrated grit. Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals. In other words, working hard at something for a long time. When a person has a high level of motivation they are more likely to be successful and strive for what they want. You don’t only need motivation from yourself but from other people too. But one thing, never depend on other people to make you happy and successful. Another way that grit is shown is by having hope. When you have hope you push yourself till you get what you want. Confidence is also a way to show grit. The more confidence you have the more you’ll believe in yourself, and push yourself toward your goal. But you need to make sure you have a plan not just a goal. Sometimes I just don’t want to try anymore, I want to give up. There was a period of time where I was sick and wasn’t attending school for about 2 weeks and all my grades dropped. I had a total of 7 Fs. I was 99.9% sure to give up. But, I asked myself, do I really want to give up? Do I not want to make my family proud? Is me giving up right now meaning that i’m also giving up in my future? I was more than sure that that’s not what i wanted and not what my family wanted. I didn’t want to disappoint them or myself. So I didn’t give up. I tried my best, I worked hard, day and night. My family was my motivation. I knew I was able to get my grades up, i knew i shouldn’t give up, I knew i was able to do it. My teachers knew that too and it just gave me more power to have a positive mindset. I proved myself that I could actually do it. I no longer have Fs, my family is proud and i’m proud of myself too. Mattie is constantly talking about a person having “true grit” throughout the book. Her definition of having true grit isn’t being courageous and she isn’t referring to dirt. Having true grit to Mattie means having a rough side and being fearless. After Mattie’s father was murdered she was determined to avenge her father’s death at any cost. Before Mattie could go out and search for the man who killed her father she needed to attend to some of her father’s business. She needed to talk to man named Stonehill about some ponies that her father had purchased right before he was killed. In this scene of the book Mattie shows her grit because Stonehill didn’t want to buy the ponies back and Mattie showed her persistence and her abrasiveness. Eventually Mattie says that she was going to get her lawyer involved and he offered her two hundred dollars but she didn’t take it. Mattie’s wanted three hundred and fifty for the ponies but she told Stonehill that she would settle for three hundred and twenty-five. Another scene where Mattie shows that she is fearless and has a great amount of grit is when she shoots Tom Chaney and the recoil of the gun sends her flying into a hole. In the book True Grit by Charles Portis, Mattie Ross is a four-teen year old girl who sets off to find and kill Tom Chaney for the murder and robbing of her father. She hires a Marshal Rooster Cogburn who agrees to find and kill him for a price of 50 dollars. Before they leave Mattie meets a man named LaBoeuf, a Texas Ranger set out on the mission of capturing Tom Chaney for the murder of the Senator and his dog. Mattie Ross doesn’t want his help, she knows that LaBoeuf will try to take him back to Texas and have him hung, but that’s not what she wants she wants him to be responsible for her father’s death and be killed on the spot or hung in her town. Rooster Cogburn is the definition of “True Grit” opposed to Tom Chaney the coward that kills an unarmed man and robs him. He lacks every trait that “Grit” is supposed to be. Merriam Webster says grit is defined as unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger. Angela Lee Duckworth’s opinion about grit being the key to success is true and correct. Her points about the kids that didn’t have the highest IQ but were the grittiest and were the most successful in the class showed that grit has to do with success. Another point that she makes is that talent doesn’t make you gritty. Just because someone has more talent than another person doesn’t mean that he or she is better. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. The final point that Angela makes is that growth mindset is a good way for building grit. Angela said that growth mindset is the belief that the ability to learn is not fixed, but can be changed with your effort.
Grit written by Angela Duckworth is an excerpt explaining the psychology of talent, effort and achievement. Angela gives us her blueprint of success and what makes high achievers so determined and focused. To go deep into detail my favorite piece about this excerpt was she explained the talent from skills, skills are only developed by hours and hours of beating on your craft and talent is something that comes s and is how quickly your skills improve when you invest effort. This excerpt reminded me back when I played High School Football and wasn’t very experienced with the sport while my fellow teammates understood each position and play but overtime with extra training with coaches and daily repetition of studying plays I became one of the best players on the team.

While looking over my transcripts, I observed that my grades for the most part either remained bad or got worse second semester. Despite how I perform in those classes I have the easiest time understanding math, and the hardest time with history. The trends in my transcript correlate to how I’ve been my entire life, I give up easily. Once the smallest thing goes wrong I give up rather than trying persevering. I choose to keep rolling down a hill because it's easier, rather than to push myself to climb it.

Abstract Resilience is bouncing back from any adversities that an individual may face in life, coming back stronger from that hardship and moving on to create a more meaningful life. Grit refers to the determination that an individual demonstrates in pursuing his long term goals. For an individual to demonstrate high grit and resilience, he should have a positive orientation in life with deep values and meaning through which they achieve meaning in life. It can be assumed that if the level of spirituality would be low, low grit as well as low resilience would also be observed.
Everything that you will accomplish will only come if you are persistent, dedicated, and hard working. Those qualities make up a person’s grit, which should be taught in college composition classes at Central Methodist University.
