16 & Pregnant/Teen Mom debut:
The impact on female adolescents.

Introduction:
The American reality television series “16 and pregnant” debuted on our screens back in 2009, young female adolescents worldwide became absorbed, in the stories of pregnant teenage girls in high school, who had to deal with the hardships of teenage pregnancy. The teen mom sequels were introduced, which followed up on the lives of the pregnant teenagers during the end of their pregnancy journey an early motherhood lives. Todays’ culture is becoming more and more influenced by media and more precisely TV shows. But how many people are truly aware of the influence a TV show has over them, and how it affects them? • How much attention, if any, do the adolescents pay to the contraceptive advertisements for this series?
• Does this affect their perspective on pregnancy: Has adolescents interests in contraceptive use or childbearing been altered?
• Did the adolescents watch the series with their partner: if so did this affect their partners view on pregnancy?
• Has the % of teenage pregnancies raised or decreased after the debut of Teen Mom?
• Has questions been posted about birth control/teenage pregnancy on search engines, directly after the series.
• Is there any posts posted to social media networks (Twitter/Facebook etc.), about the series?

Literary Review:
Media Influences on Social Outcomes: The impact of MTV’s 16 and pregnant on teen childbearing. This research paper aimed to find out whether the TV show influenced teens’ interest in contraceptive use, or abortion and whether it ultimately altered teen childbearing outcomes.

Research Methods:
For this research assignment I plan on using a quantitative method of research: a survey/questionnaire. Also I will use content analysis as I plan on analysing search engine and social media sites for key words relating to the TV series and teenage pregnancies, I will also analysis statistics on the rate of teenage pregnancies throughout certain years in comparison to these rates after the debut of 16 and pregnant. There will be a good mix of adolescent females involved in the study to eliminate possible biases.
Rationale and Significance of the Research:
As teenage pregnancy has become more prominent within society, I was interested in investigating whether a TV series like 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom influences female adolescents to be more cautious about teenage pregnancy or whether it glamorizes teen pregnancy.
