Many of the men are starving and ill; I doubt I will even make it out alive. Two years into the Revolutionary War, the capital of Philadelphia was taken by the British. The Patriots had set up a winter camp at Valley Forge, 18 miles from Philadelphia in 1777. Your 9 month enlistment is up on March 1st. One question I have to ask myself is should I quit (leave and not re-enlist)? If I quit I could make it home to my family, but there also a bad part of quitting. If all of the soldiers quit we will lose the war and then are country will be controlled by the British. This would allow me to get more money for my job. There were many hardships of the winter camp such as smoky homes and smallpox (Waldo 151). This means many people quit afraid of getting killed and would want to leave. One of my favorite journalists once said "Let it be told to the future world, that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive, that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet and to repulse it."(Paine) Then I could re-enlist because so many people left, so there are open positions for me to move up into. As long as I stayed and supported my country I would be getting paid a lot more than a normal soldier would. I would also have a better chance of making it through the winter because I would get better clothing and better housing. Recently General Washington and some of his troops including me met up with congress and asked them for food and supplies.(Powell 149). I could tell that Washington was under a lot of stress and he needed more soldiers for his army. He is starting to think that there may be no way we will win the war, and if we had more soldiers he would be more dedicated to winning the war. He has to provide so much for his soldiers, and he is failing to provide barely even food and water for them. Even though he was the general, he had to suffer the same circumstances as all of the soldiers did. We are trying to help him as much as we can because in our opinion he is one of the best generals the United States has ever had. Without him we would have already lost the war to those nasty British
