Stranded in the middle of the ocean, two polar bears on top of an iceberg floating further and further from their home land; torn away from their family, these polar bears will most likely never make it back to their arctic home, doomed to die. The further they float away from the frigid waters; the iceberg melts at a greater and greater rate, leaving the poor innocent polar bears alone in the vast ocean, filled with predators waiting to have a yummy snack. Sure the polar bears can swim back to their homeland, but the journey is treacherous since they are so far out and face the danger of predators around every corner. Sustainability is a huge upfront investment that seems to have little to no good outcome. The most expensive thing is finding a way to provide electricity from a renewable source: solar, wind, and water. These ways of collecting energy are very expensive with a huge upfront cost; the cost also gets bigger with the size of the house because bigger houses generally require more electricity to run (Joseph). Yes, a sustainable home costs more to build, but most investors earn their money back in a few years and end up making money off of the house. What happens is, since the house makes more energy than it uses, electric companies will pay people who are “off the grid,” a term used meaning the house is not connected to the electrical grid like other generic homes, to put their excess energy into the grid for the company to use. That means instead of an annoying electric bill each month, people with sustainable homes get a check from the electric company which, over time accumulates and pays off the larger investment (Kanellos). So, basically it is a system that pays itself in the long run, why not make the investment if there is money to be made? There are more benefits than drawbacks in this idea because homebuyers shouldn’t picture the sustainable home as a huge cost; instead they should view it as an investment that eventually will save them
