I attended Dance Plus Program 1 on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Victoria J. Mastrobuono Theater, which is located at Rutgers Cook & Douglass Campus. The Dance Plus Program was organized and hosted by Rutgers Mason Gross School of Arts’ faculty, staff and students. The concert was comprised of six dance performances in total. All the dances were very engaging, fascinating and interesting. Additionally, they all were unique in their own ways through the kinds of music, dance styles, theme, energy and facial expressions of the dancers that were used in each performance.
I decided to write about Hello Herman Heese out off all the dance performances. It was very entertaining and cheerful show. I don’t know a lot about the theater shows and their types, but I think Hello Herman Heese is repertoire piece of work that is choreographed by wonderful director, Randy James. We had Randy James in on of our dance appreciation classes, representing his company named 10 Hairy Legs as an Artistic Director of the dance company. At that time, the dancers of the company performed few of company’s dance works. Out of all of them, Bull was very inspiring to me. The whole class had a chance to see improvisation, outstanding coordination between performers, smooth lifts and little bit of the dance in one piece of dance. Just like Bull, Hello Herman Heese was extremely impressive, full of energy and entertaining. This part of the show exhibited the audience a convivial and charming atmosphere of beer bars, also known as taverns. They would play music with not only their musical instruments, but also with kitchen utensils such as spoons, and dance on the music. In warm summers, they would join their families, friends and neighbors outside for their regular entertainment of irish dance with a little twist. Wooden door would be used as their dance platform, because of rainy summers would make the dance difficult to do do irish dance on regular floor and road.
Finally, main focus of most of the theater shows is to entertain the audience and portray a theme or message. Hello Herman Heese was able to cover both aspects very well. The whole performance was very interesting to watch, and the bar set up was very vivid through stage settings, kinds of music, dancers performances and their outfits.
Throughout the years, America has pursued the performing arts in a large variety of ways. Theatre plays a dramatic and major role in the arts of our society today, and it takes great effort in all aspects. Musical Theatre, specifically, involves a concentration and strength in dance, acting, and singing. This is the base that Musical Theatre is built upon. For my Senior Project, I helped choreograph multiple scenes in a community musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. Choreography is a way of expressing oneself, but it has not always been thought of for that purpose. Agnes de Mille’s expressive talent has drastically affected how people see choreography today. Agnes de Mille’s influence in the world of dance has left a lasting impact in the Performing Arts Department, and her revolutionary works are still known today for their wit, lyricism, emotion, and charm.
For my second dance show review, I went to Hollywood to watch a show called Billie Holiday Alive. This show was a performance of Billie Holiday’s greatest hits accompanied with dancing as someone portrayed Holiday and lip synced her songs. The show also took time to tell the audience an abridged life story of Holiday between each musical and dancer performance. This show was quite unique because it utilized hologram technology to show someone who portrayed Billie Holiday. It also used live dancers to accompany the hologram performance. It showed the growth from Holiday’s time to the present and her influence on how singers sang and what they sang.
It is surprising for an individual to meet a famous person in the neighborhood or in a vacation resort, but how much more surprising it is for a person to get a job with a notable individual. I was shocked when as a new immigrant I got a job at The Anna Wyman School of Dance Arts and I was privileged to work with a Canadian choreographer, dancer and the Artistic Director, Anna Wyman. Through my work with her, I was able to explore the history of Canadian modern dance and to learn about my employer’s significant offerings to it. Wyman has made a great contribution to Canadian modern dance in the 70’s and 80’s with her dance company that was called- Anna Wyman Dance Theatre. Although, nowadays, we cannot admire her dance theatre anymore, the legacy resounds in her work as an artistic director, choreographer and teacher at The Anna Wyman School of Dance Arts.
On March 31 I had the pleasure of seeing Hello Dolly at Mandeville High School. As a talented theater student at the school, I take the shows that are put on very seriously. Being involved in the show, helping make set pieces, and working box office brings light to me as an individual, every little helping hand counts. I want to make sure that my school represents theater in the best way possible. With this production put on, I am proud to say that I am a theater student in Mandeville High.

The production had many elements which for the most part formed a coalition to further the plot. The characters, the three part scenery and costumes represented well the period of time these people were going through. As far as the performers entering and exiting the stage, it could have been more organized. There were a few times when the performers exited at the wrong times or it seemed so due to the echo of the music. At certain moments the music was slightly loud and drowned the performers. Many of the songs dragged on, so the pacing could have been more effectively executed. Though the music was off at times, the director's decision to have most of the songs performed center sage was a wise one. Also the implementation of actual white characters that were competent in their roles came as a great surprise to the audience and heightened the realism.
Ballroom dancing in New York gives underprivileged children the opportunity to be exposed to the arts, which is usually a program that is cut from low-income schools. The audience, for the most part, seemed to be made up of college students attending for the same reasons as myself. However, there were some audience members who are part of older age groups in the audience. They were there only seeking a good performance and a great time. These older age group audience members were located mostly in the center section of the theatre seated in the first few rows. The dress was more casual among the students but dressier for the older people. Some people were in jeans and a T-shirt, including myself, while some wore nice clothes. The audience rewarded each soloist with a warm ovation of applause after their turn was finished. This led me to believe the audience enjoyed the performance and was very respectable to the performers.
When MacKenzie choreographs she focuses on delivering spectacularly rich performances. She has the ability to combine and create beautiful and engaging movement designs with an unusually effective understanding of concert dance architecture (Nevin, 2013). The audience is able to see the beauty each dance imposes. She is able to capture the audience with every dance and take them on a beautiful journey. She is also thoughtful in everything she does, but especially in anything that deals with any type of human connection, which is one of the many reasons why she is so successful as a teacher (Nevin, 2013). This piece was based slightly on swing dancing as apparent in the costumes and choreography. The choreographer of this was Joshua L. Peugh. The composers of the music used are Tommy Duncan, Dorothy Fields, Jimmy McHugh, and Bob Wills. My favorite part of the piece was when one of the performers walked across the stage carrying a cactus that would get bigger each time she walked across the stage. This both helped separate each small dance from each other but also added a sense of comedy and a familiar transition throughout the piece for the audience. The performer did this five times and by the final entrance the cactus was easily clearing her head. I liked how this piece from group dances to couple dances and flowed very well. The overall mood of this dance was lively and fun. Another moment that stood out was when the strings of lights came out at the final of the piece. This added a touch of warmth and added to the swing, country feel of the dance. Because I am classically trained in ballet, I appreciate turn out and piles between steps; however, I thought that this piece successfully told a story. People are dancers in a certain way, how about we draw those dance moves out of your soul and dance all night. Have you ever thought to yourself, “Should I join ballroom dance? Maybe it’s not for me.” Ballroom dance is for everyone. Ballroom is a dance type where one grabs a partner and learns routines. Ballroom dance started with Cha Cha and Waltz plus it has been around since late 1800’s, early 1900’s. Multiple people say ballroom is not a sport however in reality it is a intense sport. Ballroom went from being 2 dances to having 2 categories of style. It started with Cha-Cha and Waltz; Now there’s Jive, Swing, Rumba, Lindy Hop, Samba, Tango, Quickstep, Paso Doble, and remarkably several more. They are enjoyable for all ages and helps everyone physically and mentally and in multiple ways. With all the physical and mental health benefits, Ballroom should be implied furthermore as an extracurricular activity for all ages.
Theatre will always survive in our changing society. It provides us with a mirror of the society within which we live, and where conflicts we experience are acted out on stage before us. It provides us with characters with which we identify with. The audience observes the emotions and actions as they happen and share the experience with the characters in real time.
