After focusing on unit three, immediately I was attracted to chapter twelve, which covers personality and the self. The contents of this chapter allowed me to further determine my own perspectives of personality and how people, specifically, how psychologists view personality. Not only did this chapter allow me to view myself in a different perspective, but others too. Learning and reviewing concepts I am familiar with just reassures I am entering the correct field of my studies. I understand the complexity of psychology and that in itself has a way of pulling me closer to the field of psychology. As a student, I really appreciate their point of view and I agree with many of their ideas. I think that Abraham Maslow's pyramid of self-motives, leading to self-actualization is an excellent tool when measuring personality. The fact that the Humanist approach specifically focuses in on the human being conscious and self-aware is important when defining who you are as an individual. After thoroughly reading chapter twelve in the textbook, reviewing PowerPoints and doing my own research, I found a quote from Carl Rogers that stuck with me. The quote states, "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change." I do not want to go around psychoanalyzing everyone in my life, but now I feel I can better determine lifelong friendships and relationships. As I find myself exploring the knowledge of this course I am realizing how proud I am to have chosen psychology as my first major and do not have the desire to switch. I know that I can succeed in the field and I am grateful towards Miami Dade College for allowing me to use all the materials given throughout the course to my advantage. Not only did chapter twelve give me a better understanding of the self and personality, I feel like it provided perspectives and new paradigms to my own perspective of people and our motives in life.
