Being a human service major has been interesting so far. I learned a lot in my journey into becoming a social worker, counselor, or therapist. Helping people is something I always wanted to do as a career. Taking the time to help other during their time of need is something that makes me smile. I love hearing other people's stories about what their going though, and what their feeling in that moment. It makes me appreciate my life and my struggles I been through in my even more. In this class we are learned about listening to our clients, having empathy, and having positive regard for others. Understanding my clients needs is one of the big points I'm taking from this class. I love how we sit in a circle and discuss the chapters in our book
Learning this competency made me think about what makes a good human service professional and how I measured up. It caused me to look at my life and my experiences and realize how different things could have been for me if I were to have received certain services growing up. I have also learned from my class that all kinds of people from all walks of life, can find a place they are needed in human services.
As a human services professional, there are many skills that you must already have and that you must obtain as you grow in your career. According to nationalhumanservices.org human services is a very unique feild to work in. They defined this position as the, “objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” . In other words, preventing conflicts and improving the lives of many different individuals using knowledge.
My overall experience in Intro to Human Services was phenomenal. This class was definitely one of my favorite classes this semester. I loved the way it was taught and I was able to understand how human services works while reading the book Precious throughout the semester. This course isn’t an easy class that you can just relax and breeze through. It has a lot of fundamental chapters that explain the jobs of helpers also known as human service workers. I loved how we were supposed to read the chapters before class and then we would review in class. It made more sense by doing it this way. It never felt like we were rushing through the material and the pace of the class was perfect. I also loved how professor Oropall always was willing to explain
Despite my interest in helping people, choosing social work major is a path that was design for me before realizing it. My revelation about social work first starts with my personal experience. Growing up as a child, losing a father, a mother that I thought she died, siblings that I was used to see everyday and disappear, moving and living in five different countries to find peace and security through United Nations, being abused and neglected, losing my dignity as a woman in the society, missing school for 10 years had impacted my life and helped me see the world in my own unique perspectives. These experiences show how my journey was filled with so much pain. In my darkest times, there was a little bit of light in my way that showed helped
I am currently working at the as a social worker assistant. Prior to working at the nursing home I was employed at a restaurant as a general manager. I have found that my current job to be very rewarding. The reason I am majoring in social work is because I have a strong desire to help people, make things better, and make a difference in people’s lives. My goal is to become a licensed social worker and work in the gerontology field.
My passion for people continued through high school, as I stayed involved with youth group. After high school, I continued my education at Azusa Pacific University. I entered into the University undeclared, but I had been strongly considering Social Work as my major due in part to my experiences. Once I made the decision to move forward and select Social Work as my major, everything clicked and I felt as though I was right where I was supposed to be.
I had to make a very big decision on what major I should choose to study for in college. Initially, I was interested in the Human Service profession. I knew I wanted to be in some sort of service industry. I really wanted to help those who need help from the government or from the city in order to better their lives. One career I was interested in which is considered in the Human Service profession is as a foster child case worker. I always wanted to work for Catholic Charities of NY as a foster child case worker. I thought it would be nice to start a career with them.
I have chosen social work as a profession because of my passion to help others. I want to make a difference in someone’s life and help them through the problems they are having. Whether the client needs counseling, guidance, or advocacy I want to be the person to help them. My drive for helping others and motivation to change social policies for the better is why I have chosen social work as my future profession.
I chose to pursue a degree in Social Work because I have a deep passion for helping people figure things out and get back on track. I have always tried to help people in the simplest ways without being over intrusive and giving them the respect and dignity they deserve. As a teen I found joy in the slightest things like helping people fill out and submit job applications, filling out medical forms, and explaining to them the process for things such as obtaining Medicaid, food stamps, their food handlers card and even on where and how to apply for your driver’s license. These things may seem trivial but I guarantee that for many people this was a huge help. Working with people is not just something that happens; first you have to want to help people and be patient and understanding with the people who you are helping and that does not happen overnight, second, you must be able to recognize your own limitations and know when to refer someone to qualified professionals.
This semester has given me the opportunity to engage in a service learning project for the Centerville community. My service project included providing an hour of life saving technique skills at the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church in Centerville to the adolescent bible study group. This service opportunity has enabled me to meet the nursing program outcome number three by being a compassionate and conscientious nurse who serves humanity and the profession of nursing in the spirit of Christian caring. For example, we had a devotion and prayer before teaching the adolescents; this helped engage in Christian caring and learning. Lastly, this project has given the adolescents of the Centerville SDA church the education on saving lives while being children of God.
I chose to go into the field of Social Work. The reason being I felt that I was good at helping others. I am helpful by nature and I tend to attract those looking to be helped. I believe my career choice is appropriate for me because I do fill enjoyment when I help others. It is something that I get tired of at times but the end result always lifts my spirits. I have been in the helping field for 20 years and I can’t think of any other career that would work best for me.
My interest persisted and grew as I began to see how my efforts had the ability to improve the lives of people around me. I first noticed this on a personal level as friends would come to me for advice or for me to listen to their struggles and provide comfort. No matter how mundane, horrific, unique, or common the story was, I listened to them in a genuine and non-judgmental manner. I truly enjoyed hearing people’s stories and providing comfort and advice when needed. These moments helped me realize the power of simply being there for someone, and it increased my interest of pursuing a career where I can support those who need it most. I want to become a social worker so I can provide direction to those who may not be able to get it from other sources, just like I have done for various people throughout my life.
I understand my styles and behaviors better now. Too bad I didn’t take this course earlier in life. Understanding myself will help me understand other people better I believe. That will be helpful concidering the profession I intend to have.
Taking this class this semester has really changed the way that I have viewed myself when it has come to work and the different companies that I have worked before. I have taken a psychology class before but I have never taken one that relates to management and organizations. This class has really helped me answer different questions such as why I was unhappy at some jobs, enjoyed some managers over others, and what motivated me to work hard at jobs. It’s good to learn that there are different terms and definitions for different feeling and things I experienced at jobs to know that their other people experiencing these things also. I will be going into a management position after I graduate, and this class helped me to learn many different ways to go about managing and things to avoid to keep a positive working environment.
The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I had to do it. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it was not what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience.
