The school system has drastically changed through the generations, from the 60s to 2017. Multiple parts of high school life have changed in school systems and lives throughout the years. Multiple aspects of school life have changed from the historical events to the discipline and the trends, and an abundance of these parts of school have been altered due to the generational differences. Generations of students in high school have changed the cultural norms of the school disciplinary measures. The way disciplinary actions are handled is incredibly different between the generations. For example, my grandfather, Bob was a senior in high school, his number was picked in the draft lottery. Since his fear of being drafted was so large, he still remembers his number; 270. Due to his fear, and when he learned that due to his knee problems he was ineligible to be drafted to Vietnam, he was thankful. He was full of gratefulness at that time and now in the sense that there were thousands men who died in the Vietnam War, about 58,220 according to the DCAS, and if it was not for his knee problems, he could have been one of them. This can still be true to students today, not to the extent of a draft, but what we hear in the news around us can shape our thoughts. What is known as trendy one day may not be the next. It was interesting to compare the differences between what was looked at as “trendy” between my grandfather and now. Hippies were a popular and growing trend and lifestyle due to the popular peace centered view on the Vietnam War. A trend that is closer to what teenagers do today, was the sort of slang used by Bob in his high school years. “Groovy” and “Neat-o” were the types of words used instead of new words such as “Fam” and “Shook”. This is an example of how the words may be different, but the trend of slang is a common practice amongst the generations, showing how even though we may be years apart, there is a sort of common mindset among teenagers. The final “trend” was the rise of coffee shops. This still is a trend but also a normal part of daily life. When coffee shops were on the rise in the 60s they started to be popular in larger cities, bringing in hippies and poets, but now in the world we live in, coffee shops are common to find all over and bring in diverse
